The next chapter in the James Bond saga is officially taking shape, and it’s bringing some serious creative firepower. Following the announcement that Denis Villeneuve will direct the next 007 adventure, Amazon MGM Studios has tapped acclaimed British screenwriter Steven Knight to write the new film, according to Deadline.

While casting for the new Amazon James Bond remains a tightly guarded secret, Knight’s hiring marks a major step forward for the project, which is being produced by Spider-Man franchise’s Amy Pascal and David Heyman. The writing duties had reportedly been the subject of intense internal discussions, but once Knight met with Villeneuve last week, the deal was sealed. Villeneuve, currently in production on “Dune: Part Three,” gave his full support to Knight, making the collaboration official.

Knight’s résumé is stacked with award-winning television and feature films. He’s best known as the creator of the BAFTA-winning series “Peaky Blinders” starring Cillian Murphy, and has also helmed critically acclaimed dramas like “Taboo,” “SAS: Rogue Heroes,” “See,” and “The Veil.” His Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See” earned multiple Golden Globe nominations, and he’s currently developing a “Peaky Blinders” movie and the historical Netflix epic “House of Guinness.”

Knight’s film work is equally impressive. His screenplays for “Dirty Pretty Things,” “Eastern Promises,” and “Spencer” received major awards recognition, while his directorial credits include “Locke,” “Hummingbird,” and “Serenity.” A prolific novelist and creative force behind the original “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?,” Knight was honored with a CBE in 2020 and recently received a Fellowship from the Royal Television Society.

Bond Reboot Still In Early Stages As Villeneuve Focuses On ‘Dune: Part Three’

Although excitement continues to mount, fans should not expect a casting announcement for the next 007 anytime soon. Villeneuve remains deep in post-production on “Dune: Part Three,” which hits theaters in December 2026, while Knight begins scripting what will be a pivotal reboot for the legendary spy franchise.

Amazon MGM acquired the Bond IP after purchasing MGM in 2022, and recently closed a creative joint venture with longtime franchise stewards Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The upcoming film will be the first under Amazon’s full creative control, and the studio is clearly aiming high with Villeneuve and Knight steering the ship.

With a bold new vision and powerhouse creative team in place, the next Bond era is officially underway — but shaken, not stirred, details remain ahead.
