Actor Denzel Washington made headlines this weekânot for a performance, but for his candid take on awards.
The two-time Oscar winner told âJakeâs Takesâ on Monday, Aug. 11 that heâs ânot interested in Oscarsâ and emphasized a more eternal perspective: âMan gives the award. God gives the reward.â
Washingtonâs comments came as he promoted âHighest 2 Lowest,â a Spike Lee-directed reimagining of Akira Kurosawaâs “High and Low,” co-starring Jeffrey Wright.
The film opens Aug. 15 in theaters and hits Apple TV+ Sept. 5. With 10 Oscar nominations under his belt, including wins for âGlory â(1990) and âTraining Dayâ (2002), Washingtonâs detachment from the awards ceremony resonates.
Washington Doesnât Act for the Awards
Washington framed the accolades dialogue with a spiritual slant. Describing his acting journey, he said, âI donât do it for Oscars. I really donât care about that kind of stuff,â adding, âThereâs times I won and shouldnât have won ⦠and didnât win and shouldâve won.â When asked where he keeps his statuettes, he joked, âNext to the other one.â
He continued, âIâm not that interested in Oscars.â The interviewer noted, âI donât think God asks how many Oscars you have.â Washington replied with a laugh, âHe might go, âThatâs why I gave you an extra week.ââ
His remarks reflect a consistent thread in his career: a foundation in theatre. Washington said he remains âa stage actor first,â citing his roots in Mount Vernon, New York, and his recent Broadway return in âOthelloâ as reminders of where his craft was shaped.
Washington’s Response to a Snub
If Washington felt any sting from recent Oscar omissionsâmost notably for “Gladiator II”âhe didnât let it show.
He spoke with the New York Times in February of 2025 and gave a candid response. When asked about the snub, he deadpanned, âAwww. Oh, Iâm so upset.â The delivery carried equal parts humor and indifference, reinforcing his earlier statements about keeping awards in perspective.
âListen, Iâve been around too long. Iâve got â I donât wanna say other fish to fry, but thereâs a reality at this age,â he added. âThe beginning of wisdom is understanding. Iâm getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more â and thatâs exciting.â
In addition to his two wins, he has also been nominated for âCry Freedom,â âMalcolm X,â âThe Hurricane,â âFlight,â âFences,â âRoman J. Israel, Esq.â and âThe Tragedy of Macbeth.â
The 70-year-old has plans to retire soon. He told Australia Today in November 2024, “I donât know how many more films Iâm going to make. Probably not that many.”
