Hollywood is mourning the loss of Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, who passed away at 79 after a sudden battle with pneumonia. Known for her timeless performances in “The Godfather” and “Annie Hall,” Keaton left behind not only an extraordinary film legacy but also a powerful message of compassion.
As per a report in OK magazine, one of the most touching details to emerge after her passing is that Keaton left $5 million in her will to care for her cherished golden retriever, Reggie, and to support several animal charities close to her heart.
Her Bond With Reggie: ‘My Heart on Four Legs’
Reggie, whom Keaton adopted in 2020, was much more than a pet, he was her loyal companion and daily source of comfort. In her final Instagram post on National Pet Day, Keaton shared a photo of Reggie with the caption: âMy heart on four legs.â
According to entertainment journalist Rob Shuter, âReggie was her world. Diane used to joke that her great loves were her children, Al Pacino, architecture, and that dog.â
Insiders revealed that Keaton made detailed arrangements for Reggieâs future, ensuring he would be cared for by trusted handlers and continue to live in comfort. âShe wanted Reggie to live with the same dignity and humor she did,â a source shared, as reported by Shuter. âItâs the most Diane thing ever â kind, generous, and full of love.â
A Lifelong Advocate for Animals & Kindness
Keatonâs love for animals was well-known throughout her career. For more than two decades, she worked closely with the Helen Woodward Animal Center in California, helping to raise awareness for pet adoption and animal welfare.
Mike Arms, the centerâs president, remembered her as âa genuine person, not somebody who just talked about animals, but somebody who really cared.â
Keaton often called the shelter to help rescue stray animals herself, and fans shared stories of her personally stepping in to save pets on the streets of Los Angeles.
âShe lived her values every day,â Arms said. âShe didnât just speak about compassion, she embodied it.â
Keatonâs family confirmed her passing in a statement to People, expressing gratitude for the global outpouring of love. âThe Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane,â they said.
They added, âShe loved her animals and was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.â
Born in Los Angeles in 1946 as Diane Hall, Keatonâs five-decade career included classics like “The First Wives Club,” “The Family Stone,” “Because I Said So,” “Book Club,” and “Finding Dory.” She also directed films such as “Heaven” and “Hanging Up,” and starred in HBOâs “The Young Pope.”
A devoted mother to her two adopted children, Dexter and Duke, Keaton often said she was proud to have lived life on her own terms. âIâm really glad I didnât get married. Iâm an oddball,â she told People in 2019.
Her warmth, wit, and authenticity made her one of Hollywoodâs most cherished icons.
