Dick Van Dyke has lived an incredible life and has had an impressive career, and as he approaches his 100th birthday on December 13, the âMary Poppinsâ actor is reflecting on his life and the people who have impacted it. This includes his beloved brother, Jerry Van Dyke.Â
Dick Van Dyke Remembers His Brother Jerry
GettyJerry died in 2018 from heart failure. He was 86. His health had been declining since a car crash in 2015.
Dick remembered his brother and his talents in a speech at the Vandy High Tea at the Dick Van Dyke residence in Malibu, California, on November 30, People reports. The event was held to help raise funds for The Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the Dick Van Dyke Museum.Â
“The thing about Jerry, I could do comedy. You hand me a comedy, and I could do it. Jerry was funny inside. He couldn’t help it. I could do comedy. He was comedy,” Dick said. He spoke fondly about Jerry and his comedic skills, noting how he had been funny all his life. ââ”Jerry was funny from the day he was born, he broke me up,” Dick said. “I tried so hard to get him a series, but they wouldn’t go for it.”
Dick & Jerryâs Close Bond
GettyDick and Jerry shared a close bond, and he has many memories and stories that he can retell. The guests at the event were treated to a story about when Dick and Jerry were youngsters and out surveying. Their dad had gotten them the job, which Dick described as âholding the pole.â He explained what the job entailed and why the memory was so special. âThe guy sights on through the thing, surveying. It was like out in the woods, it was a snowy day. It was about 30 degrees and we were just sitting on a lawn freezing to death waiting for this guy to signal us,â he said.
He continued, “And Jerry said something funny, and I started to laugh, but our faces were frozen stiff. We couldn’t have any expression, so we started laughing. It was the worst. God, we had tears running down our cheeks. I’ll never forget it. It’s the hardest I ever laughed in my life. He could make me laugh.”
Their beautiful relationship was highlighted onscreen too. Jerry appeared as Stacey Petrie, the brother of Rob Petrie, who was Dickâs character on the popular âThe Dick Van Dyke Showâ in the â60s.
