Dick Van Dyke’s Wife Opens Up About Rob Reiner & His Wife

The late director and actor Rob Reiner spoke with deep affection about Dick Van Dyke and Mel Brooks just months before his death on December 14. During a September 2025 appearance on Ted Danson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Reiner reflected on the lasting genius of his father Carl Reiner’s longtime collaborators and the comedy legacy that helped shape his own life and career.

During the podcast conversation, Reiner noted that his father, Carl Reiner, who died in 2020 at age 98, created “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” which starred Van Dyke and ran for five seasons through 1966.

Reiner said Van Dyke, who turned 100 on December 13, remained as sharp as ever. He also pointed out that Brooks, Carl’s longtime comedy partner, turned 99 on June 28, 2025.

“[Van Dyke] is 100 this year. And Mel Brooks is 99 this year and, you know, these guys are still incredible,” Reiner said while speaking with Danson.

Childhood Memories of ‘The 2000 Year Old Man’

Reiner also spoke fondly about Carl Reiner and Brooks’ legendary sketch “The 2000 Year Old Man,” which appeared on their comedy albums “2000 Years with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks” in 1960 and “2000 and One Years with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks” in 1961.

“If you listen to those albums, they’re the most brilliant comedy albums ever done,” Reiner said. “And as a kid, I used to come home and listen to it every day. I would listen to it, and I would know whether or not I could be friends with somebody if they got that.”

The albums, he explained, helped shape his sense of humor and his understanding of comedy as a shared language.

A Teenage Visit to ‘The Dick Van Dyke Show’ Set

In a separate March 2023 interview on “The Howard Stern Show,” Reiner recalled visiting his father on the set of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” during his teenage years.

He said watching Carl write dozens of scripts on his own left him both inspired and overwhelmed. At the time, he wondered if he could ever match that level of discipline and creative output.

Reiner also shared a moment that stayed with him for life. As a teenager, he once pitched a joke to Carl and Brooks for a performance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”

“I had this joke and they actually used it. That was like the greatest thrill,” Reiner said.

Dick Van Dyke’s Wife Mourns Rob & Michele Reiner

After the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, Dick Van Dyke’s wife, Arlene Silver, spoke publicly about the loss in a December 15 Instagram video, according to People.

Silver reflected on the emotional whiplash of celebrating Van Dyke’s 100th birthday while learning of the Reiners’ deaths during the same weekend.

“Such a weird, wonderful, awful weekend. I can’t talk about this horrible thing… I mean, Dick’s birthday was so amazing, so over-the-top beautiful, and then this. I was relieved and happy, and then this happened yesterday,” Silver said.

She also spoke about the deep bond between the two couples.

“And then Rob and Carl [Reiner] were the first people I ever met with Dick. Rob and Michele were always together, like Dick and I. And I always felt part of the Reiner family; they always treated me like part of their family. And this is just unbelievable,” she said.

People reported that the Reiners’ 32-year-old son, Nick, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder following his parents’ deaths.
