Did You Notice Carrie Bradshaw’s Subtle Styling Choice Each Time She and Aidan Shaw Broke Up?

Carrie Bradshaw’s love life has never been smooth sailing. Fans on both team Big and team Aidan have had their hearts broken. Her romance with Big was a rollercoaster, but it felt fated. When it comes to Aidan Shaw, it’s clear that something between Carrie and her other big love just doesn’t quite fit. No matter how hard they try, the couple can’t make it work. Their third split, which took place in Season 3 of And Just Like That…,has fans rejoicing. We agree, but through our cheers, we noticed a subtle styling choice that suggests they are star-crossed lovers, destined to never get it right. All three times Carrie and Aidan break up, both in the original series and in the reboot, she donned a dress that looked downright bridal.

The first time Carrie and Aidan tried to make their romance work, it ended in a sob-worthy breakup outside of Charlotte York’s wedding. The season 3 split came after Carrie admitted to her then-boyfriend that she had carried on an affair with Mr. Big. Aidan took some time to think it through before telling Carrie he needed to be on his own.

Their final confrontation took place in front of the church, where Charlotte had just pledged her love to her short-term soulmate, Trey MacDougal. Dressed in a beige Vera Wang dress with her hair in a bun, Carrie looked like an effortless bride, not someone who was being broken up with.

In season 4 of Sex and the City, Carrie and Aidan reconnected following her “Big” affair. Everything was going swimmingly, save for a couple of minor hiccups, until Aidan tried to push Carrie into marrying him. The tension between the pair was palpable. Eventually, they had to have a very real conversation about where their relationship was going. When it was clear they weren’t headed down the aisle, they ended the relationship entirely.

The styling of the pair for the breakup was particularly bittersweet for fans of the duo. In the scene, Carrie and Aidan were dressed in their finest for a black and white charity ball. He donned a tuxedo, while Carrie was dressed in a stunning white gown. They looked like they were headed for the chapel, not a heartwrenching split.

Two splits while wearing white could be a coincidence, but a third breakup followed by a white dress is absolutely a pattern. After an agonizing season of watching Aidan take advantage of Carrie, she finally breaks up with him. While the split happens at a cafe, her post-breakup outfit is a nod to a wedding that would never happen. As she walks through the streets of New York City towards her pals, she rocks a satin corset dress. According to Femestella, the dress is a vintage piece from Dolce & Gabbana. While not 100% bridal, the satin corset dress does have a matrimonal feel to it.

If that’s not an obvious enough connection, Carrie did wear a Vivienne Westwood top when she and Aidan officially called it quits for the third time. Vivienne Westwood was the designer who crafted the wedding dress Carrie never got to wear down the aisle. She did later rock the look to the Met Gala, though..

We were immensely happy to see Carrie finally stand up for herself and end her relationship with Aidan. It wouldn’t have really mattered what she was wearing in the moment. It was obvious the relationship just wasn’t meant to be. Still, the nod to their turbulent romance through her dress choice was a nice touch.
