Keaton and famed director and actor Woody Allen were romantically involved in the â70s. Still, they also worked together professionally on several films, including âLove and Death,â âSleeper,â âManhattan,â and âPlay It Again, Sam.â In 1977, she won Best Actress for her work on Allenâs film, âAnnie Hall.âÂ
Her romantic relationship with Allen did not work out, and Keaton later dated Al Pacino and Warren Beatty, although she ultimately never married. Despite their breakup, the actress remained friends with Allen. Upon learning of her death, the director was âdistraught.âÂ
“He is extremely distraught and surprised and upset, it makes him think of his own mortality,â a source said, People reports. Allen is 89. The source also revealed that the pair had âremained friends.”Â
“He appreciated her very much,” the source said, People reports. “Nobody seemed to know. He was surprised,” they said of Keatonâs health.
Keatonâs passing was unexpected. âShe declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,â a source described as a âfriend,â said, People reports. âIt was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
The source continued, “In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends werenât fully aware of what was happening.â

Keaton also called Allen her âfriendâ publicly in an interview with The Guardian in 2014. She expressed her love for him and championed him despite allegations against Allen at the time. Her comments highlight their closeness.Â
“He’s the strongest person I’ve met in my life. He’s made of steel. And talk about a work ethic â he’s one of the people that really did teach me that you have to work hard. But he wanted to. He’s the most disciplined person I’ve known, with the exception of my dad,â she told The Guardian at the time.
