‘Distraught’ Woody Allen’s Reaction to Ex Diane Keaton’s Passing Highlights Their Bond

Diane Keaton’s passing has been a great shock, even to those who knew and loved her. Her death was announced on Saturday, October 11. She was 79. 

Woody Allen Saddened by Diane Keaton’s Passing

Keaton and famed director and actor Woody Allen were romantically involved in the ‘70s. Still, they also worked together professionally on several films, including “Love and Death,” “Sleeper,” “Manhattan,” and “Play It Again, Sam.” In 1977, she won Best Actress for her work on Allen’s film, “Annie Hall.” 

Her romantic relationship with Allen did not work out, and Keaton later dated Al Pacino and Warren Beatty, although she ultimately never married. Despite their breakup, the actress remained friends with Allen. Upon learning of her death, the director was “distraught.” 

“He is extremely distraught and surprised and upset, it makes him think of his own mortality,” a source said, People reports. Allen is 89. The source also revealed that the pair had “remained friends.” 

“He appreciated her very much,” the source said, People reports. “Nobody seemed to know. He was surprised,” they said of Keaton’s health.

Keaton’s passing was unexpected. “She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” a source described as a “friend,” said, People reports. “It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”

The source continued, “In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

Diane Keaton & Woody Allen’s Friendship

Keaton also called Allen her “friend” publicly in an interview with The Guardian in 2014. She expressed her love for him and championed him despite allegations against Allen at the time. Her comments highlight their closeness. 

“He’s the strongest person I’ve met in my life. He’s made of steel. And talk about a work ethic — he’s one of the people that really did teach me that you have to work hard. But he wanted to. He’s the most disciplined person I’ve known, with the exception of my dad,” she told The Guardian at the time.

Keaton continued to praise Allen’s discipline, discussing how there would be no stopping him and noting how impressive it was that he still made movies despite being in his late 70s. “He’s going to be practising that clarinet and touring with his band and making his one movie a year until they push him – he’s never going to stop. Who in the history of movies has done that? He’s 78, he makes a movie a year and he has total control. How is that possible?”
