Action-comedy Spy is now streaming on Netflix, and there are several reasons this should be your weekend watch.

Spy follows Susan Cooper (McCarthy) a desk worker for the CIA who is forced into the field after the CIA is hacked and secret agent’s identities are exposed.

With a mission to hunt down Boyanov (Byrne), the agent finds herself in various precarious positions as she must complete her mission to stop the sale of a nuclear bomb.

Of course, as it’s a comedy absolutely nothing goes to plan and hijinx ensues. The script is jam-packed with jokes and no line is spared in this laugh-out-loud comedy.

The 2015 film stars Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Jude Law, and several other famous faces including Miranda Hart, Alison Janney, and Rose Byrne.

The film may be nearly nine years old, but it has gained a new audience of fans on the streaming platform and has already rocketed to the top 10 films in the UK after arriving on December 8.

The film has also earned a 95% ranking on movie rating aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with critics agreeing that while the Spy element of this film isn’t perhaps as developed as it could be, it’s nonetheless a thrilling comedy.

Alex Needham for The Guardian commented: ‘[It made] the audience howl so loudly that it was hard to hear some of the lines.’

‘A dizzyingly funny espionage comedy, with a non-farcical, non-spoof plot that works on a straightforward level, too,’ said Eric D Snider for Movie Mezzanine.

Total Film’s Emma Dibdin also agreed: ‘Melissa McCarthy and Paul Feig’s third comedic collaboration builds on the genre-subverting smarts of Bridesmaids and The Heat in a deliriously funny dismantling of the spy movie.’

The movie is a welcome change for those who are used to seeing Jason Statham as an action man as he gets a chance to flex his funny bone in this comedy.

One of the best segments in the film sees Rick Ford (Statham) list some of his heroic accolades: ‘I make a habit of doing things that people say I can’t do. Walk through fire, water-ski blindfolded, take up piano at a late age…’

‘I’ve once used defibrillators on myself, I’ve pulled shards of glass out of my f*****g eye, I’ve jumped from a high-rise building using only a raincoat as a parachute broke both legs upon landing and I still had to pretend I was in a f*****g Cirque de Soleil show.

‘I’ve swallowed enough microchips and s**t them back out again to make a computer.

‘This arm [points at right arm] has been ripped off completely and reattached with this f*****g arm [points at left arm].’

The film subverts and mocks spy movies but doesn’t fall into the trap of becoming a spoof which may be why the film has been so highly praised as it expertly finds itself comfortably slotting into various genres.

There are twists and turns in this movie and a surprisingly heartwarming romantic storyline.

If you’re looking for something other than a Christmas movie to dive into this weekend, this could be the perfect watch.
