Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt has revealed she is pregnant with her first child.

The 43-year-old actor, who starred as Anna Bates in the hit ITV period drama, revealed the happy news on the red carpet at Tuesday’s Into Film Awards as she cradled her baby bump and posed for pictures.

In August 2023 Joanne was pictured holding hands with a man reportedly called Mark, and a year on not much is known about their relationship.

This comes as it was revealed Joanne will be reprising her role for the third Downton Abbey film, set to be released in a year or two.

Joanne married longterm boyfriend James Cannon in October 2012 and eight years later in February 2020 she confirmed they had separated. They never had any children together.

‘We’ve actually been separated for a little while,’ she explained in an interview with The Telegraph at the time.

‘I’m looking to the future… I’m just going to embrace this year and see what happens.’

Joanne previously described her marriage with James, an IT consultant, as ‘perfect’ and said their differing career paths and similar interests were what made them so great for each other.

Speaking in an interview back in 2015 she said: ‘He’s passionate about film and theatre, so we have a common interest – and he’s not in the business, so it’s perfect.’

Together the pair set up a production company Run After It, which Joanne took control of after their split.

Before her marriage, Joanne was previously engaged aged 19 to DJ Phil Vane.

The Golden Globe-winning actor – who also starred in Liar and Angela Black – revealed on a podcast in 2021 that she disliked being asked about whether she has children.

Speaking on the Reign With Josh Smith Podcast, she said: ‘From the age of about 38, 37, whenever I’ve been doing publicity for my work or anything else, I’ve been constantly asked if I’m going to have children. “When are you having children? Or how are you feeling about turning 40?”‘

According to the Daily Mirror, Joanne also claimed she was yet to meet a man in the industry who has been asked this.
