Dwayne Johnson is one of the most sought-after actors in the entertainment industry today. This is thanks to roles in films such as “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” and, more recently, “The Smashing Machine.” Now, the beloved actor is opening up about his divorce from Dany Garcia.
Johnson recently appeared on the “Awards Chatter” podcast, which is associated with The Hollywood Reporter. This episode was recorded in front of a group of students from Chapman University. During part of the interview, Johnson stated that he undertook less intense roles while going through his divorce from Garcia.
Some examples of these films include “The Game Plan” and “Race to Witch Mountain.” He said about them, “The truth is â and I can look back on that time with real clarity these days â those days, things were a little cloudy.”
Johnson Gets Vulnerable About His Divorce from Garcia
Johnson continued discussing those films, saying, “I loved making those movies. I also think I manifested those because I donât think I was ready for anything other than easy, light, family films that made me feel good.”
Regarding his divorce from Garcia, Johnson shared, “At that time, I was also going through a separation and a divorce. When you guys get married, as a few of you may know, you sign up for the long haul, but then it doesnât always work out like that, and then it rocks you like it rocked me. And we had a baby, and what kind of father was I going to be.”
He continued, “Anyway, I feel like at that time I was really going through it. That was another bout of depression. I was trying to figure my stuff out. And that was the only thing that I really wanted to do artistically. I didnât want anything that was going to challenge me to rip my guts out. I wanted stuff that has a happy ending, and so thatâs what that was.”
Johnson also worked on the film “Tooth Fairy” around the time he was going through his split from Garcia.
They Announced their Split in 2007
Johnson is what many would call a consummate entertainer, as his public image is primarily defined by his work. However, he and Garcia opened up in June 2007 about the end of their romantic life together. According to PEOPLE, they stated, “While certain aspects of our relationship have changed, we are both vitally important to each otherâs lives.”
Johnson and Garcia continued, “We will continue to advance and manage our business interests, our philanthropic efforts, and most importantly, the raising of our child together, as a loving team.”
They added, “Weâve been fortunate enough to spend the last 17 years together as a couple and look forward to spending the rest [of] our lives together as best friends and business partners.”
Regarding their respective relationships, Garcia married Dave Rienzi in 2014. Johnson tied the knot with his long-time partner, Lauren Hashian, in 2019.
