Elden Ring movie teased as Shadow Of The Erdtree sales pass 5,000,000

Shadow Of The Erdtree has proven itself an instant hit, as the series’ creator reveals he’s already been in talks about a possible movie.

There might have been an unexpected amount of complaining about difficultly levels (given everyone should know the deal by now) but there was little question that Shadow Of The Erdtree, the long-awaited DLC expansion for Elden Ring, was going to be a massive hit.

It’s been out for less than a week so far and it’s already sold over 5 million copies, so not only is it the best reviewed DLC ever but it’s almost certainly going to end up as one of the best-selling too.

Given Hollywood’s renewed interest in video game adaptations, the game’s success has also brought with it the first talk of an Elden Ring movie, although how that would work is anyone’s guess…

According to publisher Bandai Namco, the game reached the 5 million mark within just three days. Given a full-price game is considered at least a minor hit if it makes it to 1 million, that’s an impressive achievement.

As for the movie, Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has admitted ‘there’s interest’, implying that film companies have already been sniffing at the door.

Speaking to The Guardian, he discussed how he’s unlikely to make an Elden Ring 2 but that he’s open to the idea of other adventures in The Lands Between, that aren’t games.

‘I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example,’ he said. ‘But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium. So that’s where a very strong partner would come into play. We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.’

All Hollywood will see is the sales figures, confirming to them that an adaptation makes sense, but for anyone that’s played the game, it’s hard to imagine how it would work.

The story is extremely difficult to understand even for experts in the lore, the protagonist is mute, and most of the motivations behind the other characters is never made clear.

That doesn’t mean it couldn’t work but while it’s relatively easy to imagine it as an abstruse art house movie, it’s much harder to see it as a blockbuster fantasy film.

You could have said much the same about the game itself though, which was not expected to be anywhere near as big a hit as it has became. So who knows, given the success of things like The Last Of Us and Fallout, maybe a live action Elden Ring is a good idea.
