The Rocket Man and the Material Girl have made peace, and that may be great news for fans of both Elton John and Madonna!
The two legendary singers say they’ve buried the hatchet on a decades-long feud. And it’s all thanks to a last-minute decision by Madonna to go see Elton perform as the musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” April 5.
In a lengthy post on her Instagram page, Madonna explains, writing, “We Finally Buried the Hatchet!!!
I went to see @eltonjohn perform on SNL this weekend!! WOW.
I remembered when I was in high school- I snuck out of the house one night to see Elton perform live in Detroit! It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music.
Seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different-to stand out- to take the road, less traveled by. In fact, it was essential.
Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didnât understand it. I was told Elton John was the musical guest on SNL and I decided to go.
I needed to go backstage and confront him . When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, âForgive Meâ and the wall between us fell down.
Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes. We were hugging.
Then he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!!
And you can tell everybody , This is Your Songâ¦â¦â¦.ðð©µð©¶ð¤”
Elton John Offers Apologies & Compliments to Madonna
Elton John was not only quick to apologize in person to Madonna. The singer also offered up apologies again when commenting on her Instagram post.
John wrote, “@madonna Thank you for coming to see me at SNL. And thank you for forgiving me and my big mouth. Iâm not proud of what I said. Particularly when I think about all the groundbreaking work you have done as an artist – paving the way for an entire generation of female artists to succeed and be true to themselves. You were also one of the very first people to rise up against HIV/AIDS in the 80âs, bringing love and compassion to so many who desperately needed it.
Iâm grateful we can move forward. ðð»ð
Iâm increasingly distressed by all the divisiveness in our world at the moment.
Both you and I have wholeheartedly been accepted and embraced by communities who are under threat around the world. By pulling together, Iâm hopeful that we can make great things happen for those who really need support. And have a lot of fun doing it!! â¤ï¸â¤ï¸ðð”
Singer Brandi Carlile, who appeared with Elton John on “SNL” promoting their new joint album, added to the comments, saying, “Whatever happens to this country the gays won today folks”
The History of Elton John & Madonna’s Feud
The beef between the two legendary singers started in 2002, when John disparaged Madonna’s song “Die Another Day,” calling it “the worst Bond tune ever.”
“It hasn’t got a tune,” he told the U.K. outlet Sky News at the time. “James Bond themes are usually very camp and this one’s different … They should have gone for somebody like Lulu and Shirley Bassey, or maybe I’m in that league?”
John added fuel to the fire two years later, commenting on Madonna’s nomination for best live performance in his acceptance speech for best classic songwriter at the 2004 “Q Awards.”
“Since when has lip-synching been live? Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds to see them should be shot,” John told the audience. A rep for Madonna denied lip-synching allegations at the time.
Other incidents followed through the years.
Elton John Addresses Feud in 2019 Memoir

Elton John even addressed the feud in his 2019 memoir “Me.”
In the book, John wrote that the pair’s conflict actually started in 2012. He says Madonna “ran Gaga down on an American chat show.” The comment refers to a 2012 interview where Madonna called Gaga’s hit “Born This Way” a rip off of her song “Express Yourself.”
“I couldnât see why she was so ungracious and nasty about it, rather than taking it as a compliment … particularly when she claims to be a champion for women,â John wrote in his book. âI think itâs just wrong â an established artist shouldnât kick down a younger artist right at the start of their career.â
Fans Hopeful About Madonna-Elton John Collab
In her Instagram post, Madonna mentioned the possibility of a future collaboration with Elton John, writing, “he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!!
And you can tell everybody , This is Your Songâ¦â¦â¦.”
John seemed to affirm the idea of a collab in his response to her post. He wrote, “By pulling together, Iâm hopeful that we can make great things happen for those who really need support. And have a lot of fun doing it!!”
Indeed, John has expressed a disinterest in solo projects going forward.
While promoting his new album âWho Believes in Angels?â with Brandi Carlile, the 78-year-old told Apple Music 1, âIf I had just made another Elton John record, I wouldâve killed myself.â
