Emma Stone is a famous name nowadays; however, that wasn’t always a moniker that was used by the star. Indeed, that’s not even her real name. She was born Emily Stone, but also used another name at one point.
“I actually adopted a stage name for six months,” Emma revealed during a Wednesday, October 22 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “Because the Screen Actors Guild, itâs like a business bureau, you can only have one person with that name. I was 16, and I decided I wanted to be ‘Riley,’ so I was ‘Riley Stone.’”
Although she thought the name was “beautiful,” it didn’t quite work out.
“I had a guest part on Malcolm in the Middle,” she told the host. “And they kept going, ‘Riley,’ ‘Riley,’ and I had no idea who they were talking to. Truly. So I was like, ‘I cannot be Riley.’ It came out of nowhere. I was just like, ‘Cool name. Iâll just be Riley.’”
However, when it failed to stick, “I then changed it to ‘Emma,’ because itâs close enough to ‘Emily.’”
Does Emma Ever Use Her Real Name?

“When I get to know them, people that I work with do,” the star answered. “Itâs just because my name was taken [by another actress in SAG]. Then I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, ‘I canât do it anymore. Just call me Emily.’”
THR then asked, “If some fan came up to you and said, ‘Can I take a selfie, Emily?’ would you be like, ‘Itâs Emma.’”
Emma admitted, “No. That would be so nice. I would like to be Emily.”
