‘Emotionally devastating’ new Keanu Reeves sequel gets near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score

A star-studded animated sequel has gone down a treat with fans, as it currently commands an almost-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

Fans were sent into a spin when it was announced that Keanu Reeves had joined the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as Shadow.

He appeared alongside Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Krysten Ritter, Idris Elba, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Shemar Moore, while Jeff Fowler served as director.

The movie was released in cinemas today, and follows the beloved Hedgehog attempting to thwart revenge-filled Shadow from destroying the world.

Despite only being on screen a matter of hours, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been met with huge praise from fans and critics alike, and has an audience score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to a critics rating of 88%.

Heaping praise on Jeff’s efforts on the platform, Dark A commented: ‘A gorgeous love letter to all Sonic fans, especially Sonic Adventure 2 fans! 10/10, will be seeing again.’

Aoi W added: ‘The humor had me laughing out loud, the action scenes were packed with energy, and the visuals were stunning!!!!!’

The official synopsis reads: ‘Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before.

‘With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet.’

Unsurprisingly, Paramount Studios has already confirmed that a fourth Sonic movie is on the way – after the first two films earned more than $720million at the global box office combined, the announcement should not come as a shock to anyone.

The upcoming instalment is expected to be released in 2027, meaning we’ll be watching the first three films on repeat until then.
