Eric Dane’s wife, Rebecca Gayheart, gets candid about their family’s struggles as the actor continues to fight ALS.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Gayheart admitted that their family is “taking it day by day.”
“We have some professional therapists who are helping us, and we’re just trying to have some hope and do it with dignity, grace and love,” she added.
Gayheart also revealed that their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, are “really suffering.”
“We’re just trying to get through it,” the actress and model added. “It’s a tough time.”

Gayheart also spoke to PEOPLE about her current state of mind as she navigates Daneâs health struggles.
“I don’t think I’m at a place yet where I can pull out a positive nugget,” she admitted. “I’m not there yet.”
Gayheart noted that Dane’s ALS diagnosis has brought them together.
“We’re definitely dealing with something that has brought us all together, and Eric will always be my family, whether we’re married or not, or living in the same house or not,” she added. “We are closer, but we don’t like the reason why.”
Daneâs wife said she hopes for a cure to ALS, which she described as a “horrible disease.”
Dane’s ALS Diagnosis
In April, Dane told PEOPLE that he’s diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ASL). At the time, the “Grey’s Anatomy” actor expressed his gratitude for having his family by his side during such a difficult time.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” Dane said. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, ALS affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement. Over time, patients gradually lose the ability to walk, eat, speak, and eventually breathe on their own.
So far, there is no cure for ALS, and people diagnosed with it usually live three to five years after diagnosis, per the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Earlier this month, Dane announced his partnership with the nonprofit organization I AM ALS.
“I’m Eric, an actor, a father and now a person living with ALS,” the actor said in a video. “For over a century, ALS has been incurable, and we’re done accepting the status quo. We need the fastest path to a cure, and that’s why I partnered with I Am ALS on the Push for Progress. Our goal: a billion dollars over the next three years.”
Dane continued:
“Together, we’ll renew the landmark law Act for ALS, give promising treatments to thousands of patients like me, and finally, finally, push towards ending this disease.”
