The first Esports World Cup has begun (Twitch)
The first Esports World Cup is underway, with the aim to crown the best club in the world and hand out £49 million in eight weeks across 22 events.
The inaugural Esports World Cup has just kicked off in spectacular fashion, with fireworks, dancers, LED drones, and the unveiling of the new trophy that over 500 teams will be fighting for.
There will be 22 events across 21 different games, that fans can sink their teeth into, including League Of Legends, Call Of Duty: Warzone, Counter-Strike 2, EA Sports FC 24, and Fortnite.
While the opening ceremony was impressive, that’s nothing compared to the prize pool, with $62.5 million (£49 million) up for grabs during the event.
The event is run by the Esports World Cup Foundation and funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and is set to be an annual tournament held in the country’s capital, Riyadh.
Though teams compete in their own esports tournaments, with their own specific prize pools, the Esports World Cup also introduced a new cross-game format called Club Championship, ‘which will decide who the best club in the world is.’
The Club Championship will crown the overall winner, and distribute $20 million (£15.75 million) to the top 16 clubs that have gained the most overall points, based on how well they’ve done in their respective tournaments, according to the official website.
For example, FaZe Clan will gain points from each of its participating teams at the World Cup, across different games, and be the winner if it accumulates the most overall.
When does the Esports World Cup start?
The opening ceremony of the Esports World Cup was Tuesday, July 2, but the games start Wednesday, July 3.
It’s an eight week event, starting July 3 and finishing up on August 25.
The games to start the event off on July 3 are Call Of Duty: Warzone and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, followed by Dota 2 and League Of Legends on July 4.

Counter-Strike 2, Free Fire, PUBG Mobile, Women’s Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Overwatch 2, Rainbow Six Siege, Honor Of Kings, Apex Legends, Fortnite, Teamfight Tactics, Street Fighter 6, Starcraft 2, Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, EA Sports FC 24, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Rocket League, Rennsport, and Tekken 8.
