
Ethan Hawke is opening up about his past with Uma Thurman, offering a personal take on their breakup more than 20 years after it happened. In a new GQ Hype cover story, the actor spoke candidly about the emotional weight of their high-profile divorce.
Hawke’s Candid Confession On High-Profile Split

âItâs humiliating. Itâs almost humiliating even when theyâre saying positive things,â Hawke, 54, said of the media spotlight that surrounded their split.

Thurman, 55, filed for divorce in 2004 following a separation the year prior. The couple, who got married in 1998, finalized their divorce in 2005 and share two children: Maya, 27, and Levon, 23.
How Their Love Story Began on Set

Hawke and Thurman first met while filming the 1997 sci-fi drama âGattaca.â Reflecting on the chemistry that develops between actors, Hawke compared the experience to a game of Spin the Bottle.
âThereâs a certain intimacy to the work that we do. Imaginative intimacy. Itâs such a high. It feels dangerous and thrilling,â he explained.
The actor admitted that falling in love on set can feel âlike falling in love at summer camp,â but warned that it rarely aligns with the realities of everyday life. âIt doesnât have any connection to the dailiness of real life. Thatâs the danger of it,â he said.
Moving On With New Chapters

After his divorce, the “Before” trilogy actor Hawke remarried in 2008, tying the knot with Ryan Shawhughes. The couple now shares two daughters: Clementine, 17, and Indiana, 14.
Thurman, meanwhile, was previously married to Gary Oldman and later became engaged to financier Arpad Busson. They welcomed their daughter, Luna, in 2012 before separating for good in 2014.
Thurman on Keeping the Peace

Following her divorce, Thurman chose to remain respectful when speaking about her ex-husband. In a 2006 interview with Parade magazine (As reported by People), she shared, âI cannot participate in anything critical about my childrenâs father.â
Of the split, Thurman, who refers to Hawke only as her childrenâs father, said, âI just need to keep peace,â she continued. âI think itâs fair to say that I havenât said one mean thing, and Iâm not going to start now. Itâs terrible for my family.â
She also said, âIf I see one more headline about it, Iâll gag. Iâm just another American woman who was in an unfulfilled marriage that fell apart.â
