Hawke spoke to The Los Angeles Times in November 2025 and discussed what made his divorce from the “Kill Bill” star so difficult. He said, “The public eye is like gasoline, but what makes divorce hard is the stuff that makes it hard for everyone — the family elements, how to help the kids through it.”

He added, “I’m so envious of people who have amicable splits. I can’t really talk about this because I vowed to my kids so many times not to talk about the divorce in public.”

Hawke then said, “But one thing I will say is if you get the privilege of traveling the world, you realize that everywhere men and women have a tremendous amount of difficulty staying married. When I split up, I was hellbent on not having any more kids, and I wanted to be single for the rest of my life. But then I made a best friend and I liked kissing her.”

Hawke Has Since Remarried

Hawke and Thurman met on the set of “Gattaca” in 1997 and got married in May of 1998. The couple had two children, a son and a daughter. However, they filed for divorce in 2008.

Now, Hawke has been married to Ryan Shawhughes since 2008. He told The Guardian how they met, “I met Ryan through my literary agent, and she was indeed one of Maya and Levon’s nannies during a film shoot.”

He continued, “After a short period of working for me, Ryan went back to Columbia to get her degree. There were never any scandalous thoughts or actions back then. In the years that followed, my marriage disintegrated due to many pressures, none of which were remotely connected to Ryan.”

Hawke also shared that he ran into Shawhughes at a park after his split from Thurman. According to him, “I know people imagine some kind of Sound of Music type love affair, but the truth is by the time Ryan and I were falling in love, it had been a long while since I had employed her.”

He’s a Busy Man These Days

Hawke’s career in Hollywood is on fire these days. In 2025 alone, he starred in four projects. There was the critically acclaimed indie film “Blue Moon,” and then there was also “She Dances.” Hawke also starred in the box office hit “Black Phone 2” after appearing in the first film.

As mentioned, he also led FX’s new series, “The Lowdown.” The first season included eight episodes, and there is no news about a second installment.
