*Warning: Contains spoilers for Gavin and Stacey.*

Give or take a few days, we’re just three months away from the Gavin and Stacey 2024 Christmas special – which will be its last-ever episode.

The beloved British sitcom, which started in 2007, follows the lives of the titular long-distance couple as their Essex and Barry Island families get to know each other.

Three seasons and two Christmas specials later, James Corden and Ruth Jones have created one last special episode.

Earlier this week, the show’s cast, also including Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, and Joanna Page, said an emotional goodbye to Barry as filming in the Welsh town came to a close after 17 years.

One face who wasn’t present as the cast bid farewell was Mathew Horne, but Melanie Waters joined the rest of her co-stars as they waved to fans.

But with filming now wrapped, and with just weeks left until we see it, what do we currently know about the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey?

The final episode will air on Christmas Day

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special for 2024 will carry on the tradition set in 2019, with the last of the three Christmas specials airing on Christmas Day.

The first Christmas special aired on December 24 in 2008, while the second – during which Smithy proposed to Nessa – aired on Christmas Day in 2019.

And the last ever episode has been promised to us on Christmas Day 2024, leaving the best present of the day til last – the 2019 Christmas special aired at 8.30pm on BBC One.

The BBC has promised that ‘something will be occurring’ on December 25 this year – it wouldn’t be a Gavin and Stacey Christmas special if there wasn’t.

Sheridan Smith is back

No Gavin and Stacey final episode would be complete without at least a brief appearance from Sheridan Smith’s Smithster Sister herself, Ruth.

Smithy’s younger sibling, nicknamed Rudi, will be appearing in a Gavin and Stacey episode for the first time in 14 years after missing out on the 2019 Christmas special five years ago.

At the time, she told Radio 2: ‘I’m not going to be in it. I don’t think, anyway. Like everyone, I can’t wait to watch the Christmas special. I’m so proud to have been a part of something so special.’

But we might get to see that American Boy rap one more time if reports are anything to go by, with Sheridan said to have filmed her scenes weeks ago.

James Corden and Sheridan dated each other between 2007 and 2009 when Rudi first appeared on the show. It’ll be the first time she’s starred in Gavin and Stacey since their split 15 years ago.

Wedding bells are ringing?

Gavin and Stacey’s Christmas special in 2019 ended with a shock proposal, as Nessa finally confessed her feelings to Smithy after years of their on-off romance.

And it appears the 2024 Christmas special is going to open with a big wedding – whether it’s Smithy and Nessa’s wedding still remains to be seen, however.

James Corden and Mathew Horne were spotted on set recently with pictures indicating that a wedding is being set up for the final ever episode.

Pictures taken this week have shown James and the rest of the Gavin and Stacey cast all wearing their Sunday best, with Smithy looking the smartest out of them all. Could this mean Smithy and Nessa’s big day is on the cards?

There’s also a chance that the pictures could be a massive red herring – who knows if we’ll be seeing the Wests and Shipmans go off to someone else’s big day first?
