The cast of the hit WB show, “Dawson’s Creek” reunited on September 22 in New York City for a charity event which featured the actors reading from the first episode’s script.
Unfortunately, Dawson Leery portrayer, James Van Der Beek, was unable to attend, but his family showed up and got major love from fans.
In a video exclusively obtained by EntertainmentNOW, the crowd gave Van Der Beek’s family a standing ovation as they entered the arena.
in lieu of the “Dawson’s Creek” star, James’ wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek and their kids attended. As they walked onto the stage, Kimberly and the cast started singing the theme song of the hit show, “I Don’t Want to Wait,” originally sung by Paula Cole.
At one point, Kimberly walked onto the stage with her kids and they joined the cast in singing the hit song.
James Van Der Beek Explained His ‘Dawson’s Creek’ Reunion Absence
James was one of the pivotal characters of “Dawson’s Creek,” but he was unfortunately unable to attend the reunion.
In an Instagram post shared on September 21, he wrote, “This is the evening I’d been looking forward to MOST since my angel Michelle Williams said she was putting it together, way back in January.”
“So you can imagine how gutted I was when two stomach viruses conspired to knock me out of commission and keep me grounded at the worst possible moment,” James said.
The actor told fans he wouldn’t be present at the reunion, and his part would be played by no other than Lin-Manuel Miranda.
James Van Der Beek is Bravely Battling Cancer
James Van Der Beek revealed to fans that he was diagnosed with colon cancer in November 2024. In an Instagram post, he shared, “Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And Iâm one of them. Thereâs no playbook for how announce these things, but Iâd planned on talking about it at length with People magazine at some point soon⦠to raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms.”
The actor continued, “Iâve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before. Iâm in a good place and feeling strong. Itâs been quite the initiation, and Iâll tell you more when Iâm ready.”
“Apologies to all the people in my life who Iâd planned on telling myself. Nothing about this process has occurred on my preferred timeline ⦠But we roll with it, taking each surprise as a signpost, pointing us toward a greater destiny than we would have discovered without divine intervention,” he stated.
