Fable reboot leak compares its combat to a much grittier role-player

Although the new Fable is keeping the series’ sense of humour, it’s apparently turned to a surprising inspiration for its combat.

Microsoft has several Xbox exclusives scheduled for 2025, but the most anticipated, or at least the one with the highest profile, is the Fable reboot.

While the latest trailer from Microsoft’s summer showcase finally gave us a 2025 release window, and some glimpses of gameplay, it still feels like we’ve not seen much of Fable since that initial 2020 teaser trailer.

In lieu of any new in-game footage, Fable fans must make do with new claims made by Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who says he’s seen how combat works and has compared it to The Witcher 3.

Although Corden stressed that it’s not exactly the same as CD Projekt’s classic action role-player, he did say Fable’s combat looks like it shares a lot of the same DNA.

‘You can kind of tell that melee combat, the sort of pirouettes and the dodging and the dodge-rolling and the seamless hack and slash into an execution, which looks really, really cool… all that stuff is there,’ Corden explained on the latest episode of The Xbox Two podcast. You can hear his comments from the 1:37:25 mark.

According to Corden, this is a result of Fable developer Playground Games hiring former CD Projekt Red staff, including a combat designer. Whatever the reason, Corden had nothing but positive things to say about the gameplay, describing it as ‘f***ing fantastic.’
