Fallout: Nuevo Mexico put on ‘indefinite’ hold as project lead quits project

One day one of these mods will finally come out (Bethesda Softworks)

Another big Fallout mod is in the mud, as its project lead leaves the Fallout: Nuevo Mexico project and putting it officially ‘on hold’.

It’s not long ago that Bethesda boss Todd Howard said that Fallout 5 is not the focus for the developer, as they start work in earnest on The Elder Scrolls 6. Luckily, there are lots of ongoing fan projects aiming to release Fallout expansion-sized mods soon… or at least that was the idea.

That prospect already took a knock when Fallout: London was hit with severe delays because of Bethesda’s Fallout 4 next gen update earlier this year. Not long after, another fan-made mod, Fallout: Miami, also announced it was in trouble, although it’s still hoping to be released.

It’s not so clear what the fate of Fallout: Nuevo Mexico, as it’s now officially ‘on hold’, as the project lead has decided to take a step back.

The head of public relations for the Nuevo Mexico project, J.K-Serling, updated fans on Discord recently, after months of silence from the team.

‘The project has been on hold for some time, and [project lead] Zapshock has decided to step back from active participation in the community,’ they said.

Although Serling didn’t state the exact reason why Zapshock has left the project, he implied that it was not directly related to the mod.

‘It’s a personal and challenging situation that none of us wish upon anyone. Zapshock is currently surrounded by amazing friends and family who are providing strong support.

‘While we can’t provide specific details, we appreciate the community’s understanding and patience. Zapshock is in good hands, and we are all here to support him as he navigates through this period,’ he told VG247.

There is no update on when the team think they’ll start working on the project again, or an estimation on when Fallout: Nuevo Mexico will be released.

The same can be said for Fallout: London, which started development in 2019 and was scheduled to launch in April this year. It would have done so too, if not for the new update to Fallout 4, which meant the mod no longer worked with the new version of the game.

Fallout: London is back in development now but the team has not revealed it’s new release date yet. It and the Miami mod should eventually make it to release but the fate of their Mexican compatriot remains uncertain.
