Antony Price, who has been described as a ‘visionary fashion designer’, has died at the age of 80.
The influential designer was primarily known for his collaborations with pop group Duran Duran and Bryan Ferry from Roxy Music.
Last month Price returned to the catwalk with a show in collaboration with atelier 16Arlington, in which singer Lily Allen modelled a black velvet dress said to be inspired by the ‘revenge dress’ of Diana, Princess of Wales. It was his first collection in London for over 30 years.
On Wednesday, in an Instagram post, Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes announced: ‘I am deeply saddened to hear that my very dear friend Antony Price, passed away yesterday.
‘He was a visionary fashion designer, with extraordinary technical skills. Nobody did glam better than Antony…
‘Inspired by old school Hollywood, he brought that style into a new era with a sharp sense of modernity and without ever forsaking elegance. His designs were made to shine – whoever wore his clothes inevitably got the most attention in the room.
‘For Duran Duran, he was an important collaborator from the very beginning and we continued to work with him throughout the years. Perhaps most significantly, he conceived and designed all of the pastel coloured silk suits we wore in the Rio video.
‘His distinctive creations were unique and striking. Whilst he rarely received the recognition he deserved from the fashion media, his notable clientele and many other designers all knew Antony was a genius, a cut above the rest.
‘He never failed to deliver. His swan song fashion show, just a few weeks ago was as spectacular and relevant as the first one I ever saw.
‘More than all of this, Antony was a loyal, kind, intelligent and razor-witted, friend. I’ll miss you Tone…’
The British Fashion Council described him as a ‘true original’ for his instinctive flair for design and deep love of clothes, which helped define an era of London style.
‘His work blurred glamour and rebellion and he dressed a generation of artists performers and creatives who used fashion as a tool of self expression,’ the tribute continued.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945 Price spent four years at Bradford Art School before studying at the Royal College of Art, from which he graduated in 1968, designing body-hugging trousers for Sir Mick Jagger a year later for The Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter tour.
He established his eponymous label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show in 1980, with opening looks worn by Jerry Hall, who also wore a dress designed by him for her wedding to Sir Mick.
He also designed the jacket David Bowie wore for his As The World Falls Down music video in 1986, and more recently became the go-to designer of Queen Camilla.
