The trailer for the upcoming Bergerac reboot has shown the detective in the throes of grief following the death of his wife.

It was announced earlier this year that the crime drama was returning to screens after 33 years.

The series initially ran on the BBC for a decade from 1981 until 1991 and starred John Nettles as Jim Bergerac, a detective-turned-private investigator working on the island of Jersey.

A few months ago, it was announced Irish actor Damien Molony would be taking on the lead role.

Now, a few months after fans got a first look at the new star of the show on set, a teaser trailer has been released.

It begins by showing Bergerac waking up on a boat, before a voice-over asks, ‘why did you go back to work’ and a flashback shows him embracing his late wife.

The detective is then seen at a bloody crime scene as various characters are then quickly shown, including his Zoe Wanamaker as his mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford and Philip Glenister as Arthur Wakefield, a member of a prominent family on the island.

At the same time, he admits that ‘grief was defining me and because I was a mess’.

Things then seem to take a turn as Bergerac is shown running down an alleyway and fighting with a man, while a couple are then seen arguing before a young woman faces imminent danger sitting on the edge of a building’s roof.

The trailer then cuts to Bergerac in a therapy session answering the initial question: ‘Because I needed to prove something.’

He is then seen standing by the shore on a beach staring out into the ocean.

The six-part series is due to air early next year.

When announced as the new star of the series, Damien said he was ‘incredibly excited to be stepping into the role’.

‘John Nettles has left an incredible legacy with big shoes to fill, and I hope I can bring a fresh take on this iconic character,’ he added.

This time around there will be a ‘contemporary twist’ that sees one mystery run across the season.

It’s been teased that viewers will meet Jim as a ‘broken man, battling his demons and on leave after the death of his beloved wife’.

When a woman from a wealthy Jersey family is murdered, he must then ‘fight through his personal struggles to become the formidable investigator he once was’ whilst also trying to prove to his mother-in-law and daughter Kim (Chloe Sweetlove).

‘The Wakefield’s, led by patriarch and businessman Arthur are keeping their cards close to their chests, whilst a man from Bergerac’s past resurfaces to make a shocking accusation. Is Bergerac up to the job?’

When it aired on the BBC, Bergerac was a major success, regularly attracting 15 million viewers.

Bergerac will air on U and U&DRAMA in early 2025.
