“Excalibur” star Helen Mirren teams with Pierce Brosnan in “The Thursday Murder Club,” coming to Netflix at the end of Summer 2025. Here’s a preview of the project and everything we know so far.

The story follows a group of four aging but sprightly friends who enjoy solving cold case murders as a hobby. The retirement home residents find themselves pulled into their most intense adventure yet when a mystery death takes place uncomfortably close to home. A thrilling whodunit unfolds as the group’s just-for-fun sleuthing turns into a high stakes search for the killer.
The tale is based on Richard Osman’s bestselling 2020 novel, which has sold over 1 million copies and spent 57 weeks at the top of the original fiction charts. Osman talked in a 2024 “This Morning” interview about his inspiration for the book and how he felt about bringing it to the screen.
Osman said observing his mother’s life in a retirement home made him think, “I have to write about this generation and the extraordinary things they’ve done. And the life that’s still in them, and the adventure that they have.”
On bringing his work to life on Netflix, Osman said “anyone who likes ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ will like it. Viewers can expect “British humor and a few tears,” according to the author.

The movie features an impressive cast. Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan, the fifth actor to portray James Bond, are joined by Celia Imrie, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tom Ellis, Jonathan Pryce, David Tennant, Paul Freeman, Geoff Bell, Richard E. Grant, and Ingrid Oliver.
Katy Brand and Suzanne Heathcote wrote the screen play. The project is directed by Chris Columbus, who famously directed two films from the “Harry Potter” universe: “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” and “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
The movie’s executive producers are Jo Burn, Richard Osman, Eleanor Columbus, Holly Bario, Jeb Brody.
Pierce Brosnan Is Excited to Reunite With Director Chris Columbus
Pierce Brosnan previously worked with “The Thursday Murder Club” director Chris Columbus on 1993’s “Mrs. Doubtfire.” According to a People report, he’s enthusiastic about teaming back up. The outlet says he told them when he got the call from the director about appearing in the Netflix mystery, “I was halfway there already. By the time Iâd read the book by Richard Osman I was completely hooked.â
When Does ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ Come Out?
The film will hit Netflix on August 28, 2025. Subscription plans currently star at $7.99.
