The WAGs could be making a comeback for a new series of the hit ITV drama Footballers’ Wives, according to one of the show’s original stars.

Despite first airing in 2002, the drama has seen a resurgence in popularity on ITVX, where all five seasons are available to stream.

Following years of claims that a comeback could be on the horizon, it’s now been reported that the Noughties hit could make a return in 2026, 20 years after it finished airing.

The series, which depicts the lives of footballers playing for the fictional football club Earls Park FC and their partners, was filled with scandals, debauchery and plenty of drama.

High-profile guest appearances were a memorable part of the show, with Katie Price, Peter Stringfellow, David Seaman and Sol Campbell all featuring.

Gary Lucy, 43, who played fictional footballer Kyle Pascoe, told The Sun he ‘can’t say too much about it’ but that it ‘might be in a slightly different format’.

For one, he won’t be playing a footballer, as he said he’s ‘too old for that now’.

Although Gary might not be on the pitch in this new series, he reassured fans: ‘In some capacity, yes I’ll be in it.’

The actor admitted: ‘We had a great time filming it, it was a lot of fun. Footballers used to come up and say they watched the show, but not so much now. I mean, it was a long time ago.’

Earlier this year, some of the cast reunited on This Morning, as Laila Rouass, Susie Amie, Alison Newman and Gary joined Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard on the ITV programme.

Reminiscing about the series, Cat said: ‘You’ll remember the catfights and cutting comments, burnt boobs and baby swapping.’

Ben went on: ‘Not to mention the hefty amount of bed-hopping and back-stabbing.’

At the time, Gary told Ben that he thought a reboot ‘would go down a storm, to be honest.’

He went on: ‘It was just refreshing

‘People loved it. It was just escapism. You’d just watch it and forget about all the nonsense that’s going on in real life, you know?’.

Footballers’ Wives is available to stream on ITVX.
