Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are honoring the memory of the late director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in a touching statement posted online. The couple tragically passed away in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, December 14.
The Obamas Are ‘Heartbroken’ by the Loss of Reiner
Variety posted Obama’s statement from December 15 on their official X account.
The statement reads, “Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele. Robâs achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of peopleâand a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action. Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
Reiner’s Support of Obama
GettyIn 2008, Reiner was asked by Politico, “Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton inspired a great deal of love between Hollywood and Washington. How do you think things might be different if Sen. Obama wins the presidency?”
He answered, “Youâd have the same thing, absolutely. Thereâd be the same kind of love and respect, but I think youâd have it even bigger. With someone like Obama, I think the whole country, the whole world will coalesce.”
“Every election is about change, and change takes a long time because there are big issues that canât be changed overnight. But the one thing that will change dramatically is how weâre viewed around the world. Once Obama is in there, the world will view us in an entirely different light. And that, to me, is a good thing,” Reiner concluded.

Reiner also directed the 1995 romantic fantasy “The American President,” which also features a star-studded lineup. Michael Douglas plays President Andrew Shepherd, a widower who pursues a romantic relationship with lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade, played by Annette Bening. Martin Sheen, Michael J. Fox, and Richard Dreyfuss star in supporting roles.
