The former âTodayâ co-host wore a black jacket, baseball cap, and sunglasses while Hilary kept close to him. The sighting offered reassurance that Gumbel is regaining strength as he continues to recover.
Hilary later shared the word âgratitudeâ in a simple Instagram post, signaling quiet relief following the stressful week.
His Past Health Battle: ‘Itâs Nothing to Hide From’
Gumbelâs recent hospitalization comes more than a decade after he revealed a lung cancer diagnosis in 2009. At the time, he underwent surgery to remove a malignant tumor and part of his lung.
âItâs nothing to hide from,â he said during a guest appearance on Live with Regis and Kelly, as reported by ABC. âThey opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor, and they took part of my lung, and they took some other goodies.â
In 2010, Gumbel told People, âIâm still doing well. Doctors tell me Iâm free and clear, so I hope for better times.â
A Legacy in Broadcasting & Family Support
Gumbel hosted âTodayâ for 15 years beginning in 1982, working alongside Jane Pauley, Katie Couric, and Chris Wallace. He later became the host of HBOâs âReal Sports with Bryant Gumbel,â where he earned widespread respect for his thoughtful reporting and interviewing style.
He shares two children, Bradley and Jillian, with his former wife, June Baranco. Gumbel later married his current wife, Hilary, in 2002.
His brother, fellow broadcaster Greg Gumbel, died in 2023 at age 78 from pancreatic cancer.
Friends and family say Gumbel is now taking time to rest and focus on his health. Those close to him remain positive and expect him to make a full recovery.
