Billy Bob Thornton has revealed that filming certain scenes with one of his co-stars on the Paramount neo-Western drama series “Landman” gave him “flashbacks” to his past.
Thornton, 70, plays Tommy Norris, a seasoned crisis manager (often described as a “fixer”) and the Vice President of Operations at M-Tex Oil on the show.
His ex-wife, Angela Norris, is played by Ali Larter, 49, and Thornton has revealed that filming some of the more fun and chaotic scenes with Larter rang some bells from his real-life experiences.
Billy Bob Thornton Says Scenes With Ali Larter Are ‘A Load of Fun’
GettyIn a conversation with People, Billy Bob Thornton explained that every scene he films with Ali Larter for “Landman” is a riot.
The actor said, “Every time we do scenes together, it’s just a load of fun.”
Larter’s character, Angela, is a really volatile firecracker of a woman, so her scenes are often lively. For example, in one scene, she had to throw plates of pasta all over her living room after Thornton’s character, Tommy, made a comment about her period.
Thornton has been married six times â to Melissa Lee Gatlin, Toni Lawrence, Cynda Williams, Pietra Dawn Cherniak, Angelina Jolie, and current wife Connie Angland â and joked that the chaotic scenes reminded him of his eventful past.
He said, “I get flashbacks from my past, every now and then, from various times of my life. Oh yeah.”
Thornton Has a ‘Natural Chemistry’ With Larter
GettyBilly Bob Thornton then explained that he “had a natural chemistry” with Ali Larter from the moment they met before the filming for season 1 of “Landman” began. He elaborated, saying, “Automatically, Ali and I were just passionate friends.”
The actor also spoke of his connection to Michelle Randolph, 28, who plays his and Larter’s daughter, Ainsley Norris, on the show. Thornton said, “I mean, automatically, I was protective of Michelle.”
He explained that Larter and Randolph are similar â both as people and in terms of who they play on the show â and described being around them as “a full-time job.” Clearly, he means that in a good way, as he added, “It’s been awesome. I mean, those girls, we love them â in real life and as characters.”
Larter had previously been equally as complimentary about Thornton, telling People in an interview earlier in November, “I get to work, I think, next to one of the best actors working in our business, and he brings out the best in me. In our world, when we’re working together, there’s just never an inauthentic beat, and that is incredible. I love him so much.”
Episodes of “Landman” season 2 have started releasing on Paramount+. The first two episodes, “Death and a Sunset” and “Sins of the Father,” are already available. Episode 3, “Almost a Home,” will be released on Sunday, November 30.
