Gabrielle Union on What She Bought With Her First Big Paycheck: ‘So Stupid’

Gabrielle Union

Gabrielle Union revealed what her first major purchase was once she started making good money as an actor. During a discussion at the American Black Film Festival on June 12, the “Bring It On” star said she went right out to buy a new car. “I went on the Mazda lot. I’m like, ‘Oh, I’ve made it when I have a Mazda,’” Union said. “So stupid.”

Union, 52, went on to explain that her father tried to give her some sound financial advice, but she ignored it. My dad’s like, ‘Don’t buy a brand new car. It depreciates the second you drive it off the lot,’” she said. But the actor knew what she wanted.

“I bought myself a black on black Mazda Miata with leather seats,” Union shared, adding, “Lemme tell you about leather seats in Los Angeles. Do you know I scorched myself every time I got out?” Plus, her father had been right about its value. “And it depreciated the second I drove it off the lot!” the actor continued.

Gabrielle Union’s Rise to Fame

While her acting credits date back to 1993, Union really hit her stride in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s with roles in iconic teen films “She’s All That,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” and “Bring It On.” She also made memorable appearances in series like “7th Heaven” and “City of Angels” as well as the film “Love & Basketball.”

Union has worked steadily since then, appearing on both the big and small screen and even lending her voice to various animated projects such as “Fearless,” “Strange World,” and “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.”

This was not the first time Union spoke candidly about something related to her finances. In 2023 the actor, who has been married to retired NBA player Dwayne Wade since 2014, revealed that she and her husband equally contribute to their expenses.

“In this household, we split everything fifty-fifty,” Union said during an episode of the “Black Millionaires” podcast. “But in the other households that each of us have to support, there’s always this like, gorilla on your back…,” she explained, adding that the pressure was definitely there to always be working. “‘Oh, you’re going to sleep in?’ You know, somebody might not eat,” Union said, but expressed that she was working on letting those feelings go.
