Gabrielle Union revealed what her first major purchase was once she started making good money as an actor. During a discussion at the American Black Film Festival on June 12, the âBring It Onâ star said she went right out to buy a new car. âI went on the Mazda lot. Iâm like, âOh, Iâve made it when I have a Mazda,ââ Union said. âSo stupid.âÂ
Union, 52, went on to explain that her father tried to give her some sound financial advice, but she ignored it. My dadâs like, âDonât buy a brand new car. It depreciates the second you drive it off the lot,ââ she said. But the actor knew what she wanted.
âI bought myself a black on black Mazda Miata with leather seats,â Union shared, adding, âLemme tell you about leather seats in Los Angeles. Do you know I scorched myself every time I got out?â Plus, her father had been right about its value. âAnd it depreciated the second I drove it off the lot!â the actor continued.
Gabrielle Unionâs Rise to Fame
While her acting credits date back to 1993, Union really hit her stride in the late â90s and early â00s with roles in iconic teen films âSheâs All That,â â10 Things I Hate About You,â and âBring It On.â She also made memorable appearances in series like â7th Heavenâ and âCity of Angelsâ as well as the film âLove & Basketball.âÂ
Union has worked steadily since then, appearing on both the big and small screen and even lending her voice to various animated projects such as âFearless,â âStrange World,â and âThe Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.â
Gabrielle Union Has Been Open About Her Finances

This was not the first time Union spoke candidly about something related to her finances. In 2023 the actor, who has been married to retired NBA player Dwayne Wade since 2014, revealed that she and her husband equally contribute to their expenses.
“In this household, we split everything fifty-fifty,” Union said during an episode of the âBlack Millionairesâ podcast. “But in the other households that each of us have to support, there’s always this like, gorilla on your backâ¦,â she explained, adding that the pressure was definitely there to always be working. ââOh, you’re going to sleep in?’ You know, somebody might not eat,â Union said, but expressed that she was working on letting those feelings go.Â
