Gavin and Stacey fans in bits as A Fond Farewell ends on ‘brilliantly cruel’ twist

Gavin and Stacey fans were beside themselves after James Corden and Ruth Jones decided to end A Fond Farewell on a major Easter Egg.

BBC viewers hailed the comedy writing duo for seizing the opportunity to ‘do the funniest thing ever’ by teasing the mysterious fishing trip.

For those living under a rock, Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) and his nephew Jason’s (Robert Wilfort) relationship was ruined for years after events – which have never been revealed – on their nautical excursion.

Fans had been hoping they would find out what happened on the last ever episode on Christmas Day and while Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) got close to spilling the beans, we were all still left in the dark.

On New Year’s Day, though, viewers were convinced finally all would be revealed when A Fond Farewell ended on previously unseen home footage of Jason and Uncle Bryn’s fishing trip.

But in true Gavin and Stacey style, the home video abruptly cut before anything juicy was divulged in a move described as ‘pure class’ by viewers on X.

@njostn revealed: ‘Ruth and James had the chance to do the funniest thing ever and they did #Gavinandstacey.’

@wwfcadd enthused: ‘Everything related to #Gavinandstacey is absolutely unreal. Fantastic documentary and, wonderfully, rounding off with that fishing trip home video snippet – absolute pure class.’

Echoing their sentiment, @Future4fairs wrote: ‘@BBCOne and the genuine love and respect the cast have for each other shines through! And oh my Christ the fishing trip-Genius #Gavinandstacey.’

@tori36922 added: ‘Cutting to the fishing trip at the end of the documentary brilliantly cruel!! @larrylamb47#Gavinandstacey @JKCorden.’

At a screening of the final episode of Gavin and Stacey attended by Metro and other press, Robert explained why the fishing trip had to remain a mystery.

He said: ‘I’d like to say now and forever, the joke has always been you don’t find out what happens.

‘I’m sorry everybody, but that has always been the joke, and it always will be, because it’s funny. It’s funnier that way.’

Robert continued: ‘And I was so pleased that we didn’t reveal it: because we will never know what it is.’

Fans, however, have put forward their own theories about what happened on the fishing trip. We know that soup was ‘bubbling’ and it was extremely cold.

A darker suggestion is that Uncle Bryn and Jason may have had some sexual contact to keep themselves warm.

However, this can be easily debunked, due to the fact Bryn also states at one point that what happened is ‘legal in Wales’. Since the two are nephew and uncle, any sexual relationship they would’ve had would’ve been illegal.

Many also believe it involved an embarrassing incident with the soup – potentially vomiting caused by food poisoning. This theory is given weight by a comment Dave makes: ‘‘With the soup? A man and his uncle.. it’s a physical impossibility. It defies gravity.’

Ruth previously admitted they toyed with demystifying the fishing trip.

In a 2011 interview with Wales Online, she said: ‘In the last episode of Gavin and Stacey we wrote into the script a flashback which explained what happened on the fishing trip but it didn’t make it into the final cut. It’s still out there somewhere on some computer.’

Ruth added: ‘I’m a big fan of people using their imaginations.’
