One Gavin and Stacey mystery will remain unsolved (Picture: BBC PICTURE ARCHIVES)
*Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the Gavin and Stacey finale.
The Gavin and Stacey finale provided a satisfying end to the long-running BBC sitcom, but fans are going to have to live with one big unknown forever.
Throughout the series, there has been a long-running joke that’s been particularly infuriating for those who like answers.
There is an unexplained tension between Jason (Robert Wilfort) and Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) that relates back to a fishing trip.
The excursion took place 30 years ago, and we’ve been provided with clues as to what happened but nothing concrete. We know they were both on their knees (could be metaphorical), they did it because it was cold, and there seems to be some sort of nudity involved. Uncle Bryn has also revealed that whatever they did is ‘legal in Wales’.
Every time it is close to being revealed, something happens which prevents the complete story being shared.

The finale episode was no different, just as Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) – the only person who knows the details aside from Uncle Bryn and Jason themselves – was about to spill the beans, the fire alarm went off as Gwen’s (Melanie Walters) omelette started to burn.
With creators James Corden and Ruth Jones declaring multiple times, there will definitely be no more episodes, this means that the mystery will never be solved. Robert, 47, believes this is the absolute right decision.
Speaking at a Q+A attended by Metro, Robert said: ‘I’d like to say now and forever, the joke has always been you don’t find out what happens.

‘I’m sorry everybody, but that has always been the joke, and it always will be, because it’s funny. It’s funnier that way.’
He continued: ‘And I was so pleased that we didn’t reveal it, because we will never know what it is.’
Giving credit to Ruth, 58, and James, 46, Robert said he was ‘floored’ by just how ‘incredible’ the script was when he first received it.
‘I just remember sitting on the sofa chuckling to myself again and again and again, and the whole thing has just been a joy, just a complete joy,’ he summarised.
Rob said revealing the truth would have been a ‘mistake’ (Picture: BABY COW)
Would I Lie To You host Rob, 59, is in complete agreement and previously told Metro it would be a ‘mistake’ to give any further information.
He explained: ‘They should keep the mystery. You must never resolve that. That’s the thing. It is the not knowing.’
The show ended with Nessa and Smithy’s wedding reception (Picture: Tom Jackson/BBC/PA Wire)
We will never know what occurred during the nautical adventure, but we do know the outcome of Nessa’s proposal to Smithy.
It turns out Smithy (James) didn’t give Nessa (Ruth) an answer, and wound up getting more serious with Sonia (Laura Aikman). When we joined the gang five years later, they were preparing to marry. Thankfully, they didn’t go through with the ceremony as Smithy eventually realised his feelings for Nessa, and left his own wedding to stop Nessa from leaving the country on a boat.
Nessa then agreed to wed Smithy, and with that, they brought an end to TV’s most unconventional love story! For the special episode, characters including Rudi (Sheridan Smith) and Budgie (Russell Tovey) came back into the fold, but sadly, one man had to be left out.
Gavin and Stacey: The Finale is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
