Rumours about an Elden Ring movie or TV show have just got a lot louder as George R.R. Martin has hinted that he’s personally involved.
There’ve been video game movies around for over three decades now but it’s strange to think that it’s Sonic The Hedgehog, of all things, that finally and both (relatively) high quality and authentic to the original games.
It’s the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and TV shows such as The Last Of Us and Fallout which, really caught Hollywood’s interest though and now every major new game seems to have a movie rumour attached to it… including the seemingly unfilmable Elden Ring – which creator Hidetaka Miyazaki was only last week hinting would get a live action adaptation.
And now Game of Thrones writer George R.R. Martin is doing the same, in what is the world’s least subtle clue that he knows about it and is probably involved.
Martin used a new blog entry to talk about how Elden Ring recently won the Nebula Award for Game Writing. Martin collaborated on the game with Miyazaki to create the ‘worldbuilding’ but it’s never been entirely clear what exactly he did.
It’s not thought he wrote any of the text in the game but instead just came up with the background lore. Although it’s difficult to tell because his description of the process has always been vague, and the end result doesn’t feel any different than any other FromSoftware game.
In any case, he congratulated From on the award and then made then added the following paragraph to his blog:
‘Oh, and about those rumours you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring… I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumour?’
The rumours only appeared at the end of last week, and weren’t that widely reported, so the fact that he even knew about them is suspicious.
He’s clearly implying he knows about whatever is going on and is actively involved. Martin has had very little experience with movies during his career but has been working in TV since the early 80s, so on that basis it’s much more likely he’d be directly involved in an Elden Ring TV show.
If he’s hinting about it this openly it also suggests some kind of official announcement might be imminent, which would be useful as there are big questions to answer on how you’d adapt a game with such loose and ambiguous storytelling as Elden Ring.
The only problem is that, as fans of his novels will attest, Martin has a habit of talking about his work well in advance of it ever actually appearing, so it could be a long wait for an Elden Ring adaptation.
