- Mary from Gogglebox got emotional watching The Sound of Music, calling it her favourite film ever
- But fans were baffled by Mary’s comment that the film reminded her of ‘when people were nice’ despite its Nazi theme
- The Celebrity Gogglebox special featured stars like David Tennant, raising funds for Stand Up To Cancer
There was one moment on Celebrity Gogglebox that left fans utterly perplexed.
The Channel 4 reality series returned for a star-studded Stand Up To Cancer special, featuring Joe Marler and Nick Mohammed; David and Georgia Tennant; Josh Hartnett and Tamsin Egerton; and Kieran Culkin and Jazz Charton.
The one-hour episode included reactions to some dastardly tough questions on The 1% Club and Catchphrase, Meghan’s new festive Netflix special and moving stories of people’s real-life experiences with cancer.
There were tears, laughter and plenty of money raised for the good cause.
One reaction, however, left fans doing a double-take with Gogglebox regulars, Giles and Mary.
At the end of the episode, everyone was shown the classic seasonal watch, The Sound of Music.
The stirring 1965 musical movie starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer follows the Von Trapp family as we witness the rise of Nazism in Austria.
As it appeared on screen, it flicked to an emotional Mary who immediately started tearing up.
While Giles consolded her, she said: ‘This is my favourite film of all time, Nutty. I just have to think of it.
‘It reminds me of when people were nice. You remember when the average person was really nice. They’re all watching video nasties now.’
Needless to say, fans were quick to point out that it was a strange film to use as a reminder of the kindness of humanity, given the prominent political themes.
‘Mary in tears on Gogglebox. “The Sound of Music reminds me of a time when people were nice”. It’s literally about Nazis,’ proscot4indy wrote on X.
‘Mary crying when The Sound of Music comes on, it reminds me of when people were nice. It’s about escaping from the Nazis,’ Lala agreed.
Another user, Emily, echoed the sentiment, while Michael acerbically posted: ‘”The Sound of Music reminds me of when people were nice” Because it definitely isn’t set in Nazi Germany / Austria.’
Although some understood Mary’s emotional display.
‘I’m with Mary on this, just thinking about The Sound Of Music sets me off,’ Juliet agreed.
While Anastazia sympathised: ‘Mary bursting into tears just at the thought of The Sound Of Music, she’s so real for that.’
At another point in the episode, Nick stopped fans short when he compared Christopher Plummer to David Cameron, while Kieran and Jazz got caught up in the pedantics of a 1% Club question.
Celebrity Gogglebox Stand Up To Cancer special is available to stream on Channel 4 now.
