After years of speculation, the long-dormant âGremlinsâ franchise may finally be waking up. A key star just revealed a surprising update that has longtime fans buzzing, with movement behind the scenes that could bring Gizmo and the gang back to theaters for a brand-new adventure.
The development came during Comic Con Manchester, where actor Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in the first two films, told the crowd that a new script for âGremlins 3â has officially been completed. More importantly, he said Warner Bros. is âincredibly interestedâ in making it â and thereâs just one person who needs to approve it.
Steven Spielbergâs Approval Could Decide ‘Gremlins 3’ Fate

According to Variety, Galligan said, âThe new âGremlins 3â script is sitting on executive producer Steven Spielbergâs desk, awaiting his sign-off.â He added, âYou can thank the success of âBeetlejuice Beetlejuiceââ as the reason Warner Bros. is suddenly eager to revive other classic 1980s properties. Released in 2024, the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burtonâs cult classic grossed over $450 million worldwide and seemingly reignited interest in legacy franchises.
While no director or writer has been officially named, the franchiseâs resurgence seems to be gaining momentum. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Pictures co-chief Pam Abdy confirmed that the studio was collaborating with Spielbergâs Amblin Entertainment to develop new projects tied to both the âGremlinsâ and âGooniesâ franchises.
For decades, âGremlins 3â has lingered in development limbo, with rumors and stalled attempts dating back to the early 1990s. Several versions of a sequel were reportedly written, ranging from darker reboots to legacy follow-ups, but none gained real traction. In 2017, original screenwriter Chris Columbus revealed he had completed a script intended to preserve the spirit of the original film, but the project remained inactive. Occasional updates from cast and crew kept fan interest alive, yet studio momentum never followed. Galliganâs recent comments now represent the clearest sign in years that a new installment could finally happen.
‘Gremlins’ Franchise Keeps Evolving with New Animated Series
The original âGremlins,â directed by Joe Dante and executive produced by Spielberg, grossed over $212 million worldwide and helped usher in the PG-13 rating. Although its sequel, âGremlins 2: The New Batch,â made a modest $41 million in 1990, it earned cult status over time for its wild, self-aware tone.
More recently, the franchise has lived on through HBO Maxâs animated prequel series. Season 1 of âSecrets of the Mogwaiâ debuted in 2023, and Season 2, âThe Wild Batch,â arrived earlier this year. Galligan even lent his voice for a recurring guest role.
Now, with a finished script, studio interest, and Spielbergâs involvement, âGremlins 3â may finally be ready to hatch. After 35 years of speculation, fans just might get the sequel theyâve been waiting for, if Spielberg says yes.
