When Meghan Markle introduced As Ever, her new collection of cooking and entertaining products, thoughts immediately flew to celebrities who had already established their lifestyle brands. Many wondered if there would be competition between the Duchess of Sussex and Goop lifestyle company owner, Gwyneth Paltrow.
Martha Stewart has famously dissed Paltrow’s brand, once remarking to Net-a-Porter’s Porter magazine (via Page Six), “She just needs to be quiet. Sheâs a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldnât be trying to be Martha Stewart.” Markle, on the other hand, doesn’t need to worry about such criticisms from Paltrow. The actress took to her Instagram Stories to prove the two had no bad blood.
Markle Eating Pie in Paltrow’s Kitchen Cleverly Shuts Down Rumors
In a March 25 Instagram Story, Gwyneth Paltrow answered questions from fans. One of the questions was, “Are you comprehending the Meghan Markle beef that social media says you two have?” Gwyneth responded, “I genuinely do not understand this at all, whatsoever.” Then she looked off camera and asked, “Do you understand this?” We quickly saw that the person offscreen was Meghan Markle herself, who shrugged and took a bite of pie before she started laughing.
The tongue-in-cheek moment refers to a recent interview in which Paltrow said she didn’t know her. âI mean, Iâve met Meghan, who seems really lovely, but I donât know her at all,â she told Vanity Fair. âMaybe Iâll try to get through their security detail and bring them a pie.â Instead of bringing it to her, Markle appears to come to Paltrow’s house for the pie.
She Calls Out Media for Pitting Women Against Each Other
Paltrow’s invitation to Markle over for pie to publicly dispute the narrative that the two were feuding isn’t out of character. In the Vanity Fair interview, she remembered her mother telling her, “Another woman is never your competition.” Paltrow took this advice to heart.
Paltrow reacted similarly when Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, and Blake Lively began their companies. Women with similar companies were pitted against each other, frustrating Paltrow. Yet, men with similar liquor brands were ignored. “This is a very interesting question, because I wonder if George Clooney would be asked about Puff Daddyâs ancillary liquor line,” she responded to Time. “Iâm fascinated how the media in particular are so confounded by entrepreneurial women doing something outside of their box.”
“People are grasping at straws to tie us together and I get it, because it makes a good story,” she continued. “But Iâm slightly offended by this sort of generalization that happens with myself and Jessica and Reese and Blake. Yes, there are similarities. But there arenât stories in TIME written saying, âWow, look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, who did x, y, and z!â
