‘Hacks’ Star Reveals the Icon Who Turned Down the Show

The Hacks show is one of the most popular on Max

“Hacks” isn’t only one of the most popular shows on Max, but it’s also one of the most critically acclaimed. Throughout its four seasons, the show has featured several guest stars. However, as alluded to in the most recent season, Cher turned down a guest starring role.

Paul W. Downs, one of the stars and co-creators of “Hacks,” recently participated in a roundtable discussion with “The Hollywood Reporter.” While there, he revealed the news that he wanted the music legend to appear in an episode, having sent her manager the script.

According to Paul, “We said to Cher’s manager, ‘Is there any feedback? Can we change the script? Anything we should know?” He continued to say that the manager told him that Cher didn’t want to do the “Hacks” show.

From there, Paul was asked if there was any lingering hope of Cher doing “Hacks.” He didn’t say no, but stated that the joke that made it into season four of “Hacks” was them “having fun.” He went on, “It’s about truth in comedy.”

Cher Has Turned Down “Hacks” Three Times

According to Cover Media, Paul was recently on “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” While on the late-night series, he revealed that they had asked Cher to do the “Hacks” show multiple times. He said, “Well, one person in particular we asked to be on the show, Seasons 1, 2, and 4 – and that person is Cher.”

Paul continued, “So we wrote a commercial for Cherlato. Deborah (Jean Smart) was gonna go to the Cherlato factory, she was gonna taste all the Cherlato, she was gonna love the Cherlato, and then when it came down to shoot, we got a pass.”

He then said, “Now, people usually say, ‘I love the show, but respectfully, I don’t have time.’ Once, Javier Bardem said, ‘I cannot say yes right now,’ which is Spanish for ‘no.’”

The Show Is Coming Back for Season 5

“Hacks” season four recently finished airing. As it’s one of the most popular shows on “Max,” the streamer announced it had been renewed for a fifth season ahead of the finale. It’s unclear when production on the season will begin, but it’s assumed that it will air early in 2026.

The sad news is that the upcoming fifth season of “Hacks” could be the last for the show. According to ELLE, the creators of the series have said on multiple occasions that they planned for it to run for five seasons instead of overstaying its welcome.

Fans can stream the show on Max.
