HBO is renowned for its prestigious TV shows, which often span several years. One of the network’s most notable series, “Big Little Lies,” has had discussions for a third season for quite some time. Now, the show, which stars Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley, is close to beginning production.

According to Deadline, Francesca Sloane has been tapped to write the first episode for season three of “Big Little Lies.” She will also executive produce the new season alongside series creator David. E. Kelley. This comes with Sloane’s two-year deal with HBO.

‘Big Little Lies’ Has a Huge Fan Base

“Big Little Lies premiered on HBO in February 2017 and was initially intended to be a mini-series. Based on a book of the same name, the series is set on the Monterey Peninsula, including Monterey and Pacific Grove.

According to Variety, season one of “Big Little Lies” averaged an impressive 8.5 million viewers across multiple platforms. This is especially notable, given that the series premiere drew 1.8 million viewers, indicating that the show gained popularity as it continued.

There was considerable buzz surrounding the HBO series as it headed into its second season. The 2019 premiere episode debuted with over 2.5 million viewers on both HBO and streaming services. This was up 34 percent from the premiere of the series’s first season. Notably, the cast was expanded for season two, including Meryl Streep and Zoe Kravitz.

“Big Little Lies” also performed well during the 2017 awards season. It won eight Primetime Emmy awards, including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actress for Kidman, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Dern, and Outstanding Supporting Actor for Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd.

Season two of the HBO series received five Primetime Emmy award nominations but didn’t win any.


Kidman Confirmed a Season 3 in 2023

For some time, fans of “Big Little Lies” were uncertain if HBO was moving ahead with season 3. However, according to PEOPLE, Kidman seemingly confirmed the news while at a fan event.

She said at the time, “I loved Big Little Lies because it sort of came along at a time in my life when I had my children, and I was thinking I was going to retire, and then this situation came along, where Reese Witherspoon and I were able to produce that show.”

Kidman continued, “And then all of you watched it and made it a massive success.” She then said, “And we will be bringing you a third one, just FYI.”
