‘Home Alone’: Kevin McCallister Wouldn’t Have Gotten to Paris Even if His Family Hadn’t Forgotten Him

No Christmas season is complete without a viewing of Home Alone. The movie is now 35 years old. Still, fans are still getting fed new information about the McCallister family and noticing subtle details in the film. After dozens of rewatches, it is safe to say that Kevin McCallister wasn’t getting on his flight to Paris, regardless of whether or not he was left home alone. The trouble didn’t start with a bad head count. It didn’t even start with a power issue or even putting Kevin in the attic to sleep alone. The Christmas trip was doomed the second the pizza fight broke out.

Most fans assume the late wake-up and faulty headcount led to Kevin being left behind. That’s not where things began to unravel, though. A very brief moment earlier in Home Alone proved Kevin McCallister wasn’t going to Paris even if his family hadn’t forgotten him. The night before the family packs up and heads to the airport, they order pizza. During family dinner, a fight between Kevin and Buzz breaks out when Kevin finds that his brother ate the last slice of his preferred pizza.

In the ensuing melee, drinks get spilled, and several papers get wet. One paper in particular is Kevin’s boarding pass. Peter McCallister, Kevin’s father, cleans up the mess by scooping all of the sodden paper, including the boarding pass, into the garbage. When the family rushes to the airport, they accidentally include the neighbor in the family headcount. Still, they keep missing Kevin because of the boarding pass debacle. Even if Kevin had woken up, he wasn’t getting on the plane without a boarding pass, though his family would have noticed at that point. The vacation would have been ruined regardless.

The movie is based on real-life travel anxiety

Many elements went into ensuring the McCallister family left Kevin behind in Home Alone. The flick’s early moments are so detailed because they were born of screenwriter John Hughes’ real-life travel anxiety. Hughes’ son, James, told Chicago Magazine that his father wrote the Home Alone script after the Hughes family returned from a European vacation. Apparently, John Hughes was so fearful about leaving one of his kids behind that the idea for Home Alone was born. It took him less than two weeks to write the script.

Hughes had two children. He stepped away from Hollywood in the late 1990s to focus on a quieter, family-focused life. Hughes died in 2009 while visiting his son in New York City. He was 59.
