Macaulay Culkin, once the world’s most recognizable child actor thanks to his role as Kevin McCallister in the “Home Alone” films, is making headlines again—this time not for a project, but for his candid thoughts on how he manages public attention.

Drawing the Line: Macaulay Culkin’s Rules for Personal Space

Despite his enduring fame, Culkin has emphasized that his family life is off-limits, and he’s set boundaries to maintain that privacy.

In a recent appearance on the SmartLess podcast hosted by Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, Culkin explained how he handles fan interactions, particularly when he is with his wife and children. “Don’t approach me when I’m at the dinner table. I don’t like that. Don’t approach me when I’m with my kids,” he said. Culkin shares two children with his partner, former Disney star Brenda Song.

The Golden Globe nominated actor also made it clear that he strongly feels certain spaces should remain private, adding, “Please don’t follow me into bathrooms.”

Culkin also shared with SmartLess listeners that over time, he’s realized he can take ownership of the way he engages with the public. “I just realized that I’m in charge of the social contract,” he said. “I’m in charge of the interaction. I can guide this interaction.”

This sense of agency extends beyond his relationship with fans. In an interview on the YouTube series “Mythical Kitchen,” Culkin reflected on stepping away from the industry at a young age to prioritize a more typical adolescence.

“What I wanted was to be with people my own age,” he said. “A lot of the stuff I did when I was a kid — I wasn’t doing ensembles. It was me. I wanted to go out. I wanted to date girls. I wanted to hang out with people my own age. I wanted to go to a party. I can’t tell you how many bar mitzvahs I missed.”

Now 45, Culkin continues to act on his own terms, taking only the roles that align with his interests and lifestyle. More importantly, he has created a structure that allows him to be present for his children and spend time with family away from the spotlight.

As Culkin explained, “Being in charge of my life means making space for the people who matter most—and knowing how to politely draw the line when needed.”
