How a Night Out Led Heidi Klum to Her Perfect Match: ‘Sliding Door Moment’

Tom Kaulitz and Heidi Klum

Ever since Heidi Klum met Tom Kaulitz seven years ago, the pair have been inseparable. Kaulitz has even happily joined Klum in her quest for increasingly outrageous and bold Halloween costumes. It’s hard to imagine anything topping the Mr. and Mrs. ETs they went as for 2024, but knowing Klum, she has something even bigger and better planned for her and her hubby for 2025.

Recently, Klum admitted that meeting Kaulitz almost didn’t happen. The model and former “America’s Got Talent” host calls deciding to go out the night she met him is her “sliding door moment.”

Klum’s Journey From Reluctant Party Guest to Finding True Love

Seven years ago, Klum was invited out to a party by a friend. “I really wanted to stay home,” the “Project Runway” host told “People.” “But then I gave myself a little kick in the butt.” She ended up meeting her future hubby at the party — something that may never have happened if she’d stayed in that night.

When Klum met the Tokio Hotel guitarist, she’d been married twice before. She had been married to stylist Ric Pipino for five years, and then to the musician Seal for seven years. She looked at her relationship with Kaulitz as a “clean slate.” But, she also struggled not to let the past seep into her new romance.

“[At first] I wanted to [project] what I had learned from different men I had been with… like ‘Ooh, this reminds me of something that happened, is that a flag?’” she recalled. “But Tom said, ‘Don’t do this to me, because I’m not this person, I’m not that person. Scratch everything. I have to have a fair chance.’”

The Sweetest Proposal: How Kaulitz Included Heidi Klum’s Kids

Eight months after they began dating, Kaulitz joined Klum in celebrating her favorite time of the year: Halloween. Kaulitz dressed as Shrek to Klum’s Princess Fiona. The fact that he sat through the hours of prosthetics and makeup show just how much he was head over heels.

“It’s special that I finally found my Shrek,” Klum told ET at the time. “I kind of always wanted to be Fiona, but I never had the Shrek to do it with.”

Two months later, Kaulitz asked Klum’s kids: Leni, Henry, Johan, and Lou, for her hand in marriage. For the “Victoria’s Secret” model, it was perfect.

“The sweetest thing that my partner has done for me is that he asked my kids first if he could ask for my hand,” Klum told “People.” “They figured out how they were going to do it and then they all surprised me on Christmas morning six years ago. I thought that was so nice that he involved my kids.”
