“Pitch Perfect” star Adam Devine, 41, opened up to Graham Bensinger in a March 2, 2025 interview with inspiring positivity about the scary medical issue he has faced for years.
The comedian also spilled on a puzzling encounter he had with Zac Efron, and revealed the common habit that wreaked havoc on his body.
“Nightmare” Condition Left Adam Devine Struggling To Walk
Adam Devine kept his signature positivity while opening up to Bensinger about the ongoing aftermath of being hit by a cement truck as a child.
The severity of his injuries led to a long journey of ups and downs that necessitated stem cell treatments and dozens of surgeries.
In the new interview with Bensinger, Devine said he was told by doctors a month before the February 2024 birth of his son, Beau, that he possibly had Stiff Person Syndrome. The rare autoimmune disorder affects singer Celine Dion, who described it in a 2024 Today interview.
Devine described to Bensinger how scary the condition can be, saying it can make “your muscles get so tight that you then you can no longer walk. You can no longer move, then your heart will stop beating, because your heart is a muscle and it gets too tight to beat and then you die.”
“I was like ‘Oh great, I’m gonna die,’” Devine joked.
He added that he was told by doctors the typical life expectancy is six years, which caused him to panic about his son’s future and the possibility that the child might only ever know “a crippled father.”
As his body become so tight that he could “only walk a few blocks,” Devine says doctors sent him to the condition’s top expert, where he received a surprise. At the appointment, Devine says he was told, “You don’t have it. This is from your accident when you were a child.” The expert called the spasms unexplainable, but theorized the lingering effects of the childhood accident might be causing Devine’s body to “misfire.”
He also said he suspected his former habit of drinking the equivalent of “six to nine” coffee cups worth of caffeine every day was exacerbating his physical issues. “I have dialed that back,” he told Bensinger.
Adam Devine Says Zac Efron Mysteriously Ghosted Him
Devine said he was supposed to receive a visit from the “High School Musical” heartthrob at the comedian’s Orange County home, but the rendezvous never happened and he still doesn’t know why.
The actor said after a flurry of activity on a text chain with the cast of “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” Efron called him “out of the blue.”
“Hey man, I just wanna let you know that I miss you,” Devine says Efron told him, before requesting to “come and crash” with his former costar for two weeks.
“Chloe, I think Zac’s gonna come live here with us for a couple weeks,” Devine says he told his wife, Chloe Bridges.
But the “Hairspray” star never showed up. “And then he ghosted me, dude,” explained Devine. “Never called back. I even texted him like ‘Are you gonna stay here?’ And I haven’t talked with him since. So I’ve got no idea, dude,” he added.
