How Emma Stone Failed Her ‘All That’ Audition

Emma Stone was once hoping to be a part of the sketch comedy show All That, which helped launch the careers of Amanda Bynes and many others. But Stone didn’t get the chance to work with the iconic 90s cast, which actually paid off for her in the end.

Stone would’ve fit right in with the other young child actors in the Nickelodeon hit show All That. She’d even worked with a few of the cast’s alums, like Bynes in Easy A. Additionally, she’s also worked alongside Keenan Thompson on Saturday Night Live. Her background in theater and her own comedic instincts would’ve served the show well.

“Well, I always loved acting and improv and sketch comedy and theater, which I did at a local youth theater,” Stone once told Cinemablend.

Although this should’ve helped her chances when trying out for All That, things didn’t go as planned when the time came.

“I thought they were going to give us sketches,” Stone said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And then five minutes before I went in the room they said, ‘You need to have three characters when you come in the room.’ So I was like, ‘Okay,’ and then I made up a couple of characters.”

But it seems that the characters The Amazing Spider-Man star created weren’t up to Nickelodeon’s standards.

“I remember that one was a cheerleader that couldn’t spell what she was cheering,” she added. “And then there was another one that was actually pretty nuts that was a babysitter who is possessed. So as she’s reading books to the kids, she’s like, ‘and then Goldilocks and the [demon voice] three bears,’ and she catches her head, and is like, ‘Sorry about that. Sorry about that.’ And then would keep reading.”

All That wasn’t the only time Stone was rejected. As is the case with the film industry, Stone was rejected quite a bit in Hollywood for all kinds of reasons. Including her voice. She got to relive her earlier career rejections when she played an aspiring actor in the feature La La Land.

“I relate to pretty much every audition in the movie,” Stone once told E! News about her La La Land experience. “I’ve had a version of those many many times. I think the hardest part was, for awhile, I auditioned for a lot of things, which is great when you’re an actor and you’re getting a lot of auditions.”

“I wasn’t getting called back for anything when I first moved to LA and so, they just stopped sending me out,” Stone added. “There was a large swath of time where nobody wanted me to come in and that feeling was actually worse than any of the, you know, the initial auditions and being kind of rejected.”

However, Stone advised the only way to handle the rejection was to continue pushing through.

“Just keep your head up and keep going. I think you know if you’re trying to act there will be a lot of rejection. That is part of the process, it never stops. It continues now. Like, there are parts that you want now that don’t come to you. It just is what it is. It’s like being human,” she once told ABS-CBN.

But Stone also credited her support system, like her parents and teachers, to keep encouraging her. Her first grade teacher put her in a school play, which gave Stone her first taste of acting. Meanwhile, Stone’s parents took her to her first theater audition, supporting her acting dreams early.
