How Rob Reiner Met Michele Singer Reiner

A love story spanning more than three decades came to a heartbreaking end for Hollywood legend Rob Reiner and the love of his life, Michele Singer Reiner.

The couple was found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday, December 14, TMZ reported. According to multiple reports, the two “suffered lacerations consistent with a knife.”

The Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division is investigating the deaths, Fox News confirmed.

While the circumstances surrounding their final moments remain under investigation, Rob and Michele’s loving partnership, marked by deep affection and shared creativity, will be remembered long after the tragedy.

How Rob Reiner Met His Loving Wife

Rob Reiner met his future wife, Michele Singer, while directing the 1989 romantic comedy “When Harry Met Sally…,” a film that would ultimately mirror his own life in unexpected ways.

At the time, Reiner was newly divorced and questioning whether lasting love was possible for him again. That emotional uncertainty directly shaped the film’s original concept.

“I’d been married for ten years. I’d been single for ten years, and I couldn’t figure out how I was ever going to be with anybody,” Reiner said in an interview with Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace on CNN. “That gave birth to When Harry Met Sally. I hadn’t met anybody, so it was going to be the two of them seeing each other after years, talking, and then walking away from each other.”

Why the Ending of ‘When Harry Met Sally…’ Changed

When Reiner met Singer during production, his perspective on love shifted. That personal transformation led him to rethink the film’s happy ending.

“The original ending of the film that we had was that Harry and Sally didn’t get together,” he revealed, as per Today.

Fans know the story ultimately took a very different turn, with Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan’s characters choosing love in the film’s final moments.

Reiner later credited Singer as the reason the movie ended on a hopeful note. Their real-life romance changed the emotional core of one of Hollywood’s most beloved romantic comedies.

Reiner and Singer fell in love quickly and married in 1989, the same year “When Harry Met Sally…” was released. Together, they raised three children: Jake, born in 1991; Nick, born in 1993; and Romy, born in 1997. Reiner was also previously married to Penny Marshall and adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner, during that marriage.

Singer built a respected career as a photographer and famously shot the image of Donald Trump that appeared on the cover of “The Art of the Deal,” according to Variety.

Reiner, born March 6, 1947, in the Bronx, New York, was the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner and actress Estelle Reiner.

He rose to fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family,” winning two Emmy Awards before becoming one of Hollywood’s most influential directors. His films include “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand by Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “Misery,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally…”

Reiner often said his relationship with Michele inspired the hopeful ending of “When Harry Met Sally…,” a lasting reminder of how their love story shaped both his life and his work.
