How to access and start playing Elden Ring DLC Shadow Of The Erdtree

Make sure you can access the expansion right away (Bandai Namco)

Playing Shadow Of The Erdtree isn’t as simple as just selecting it from the menu, so here’s what you need to do in Elden Ring to access it.

After been lauded as the best game of 2022, thanks to its amazing world design and beautiful artwork, Elden Ring is set to continue its story with the upcoming DLC expansion Shadow Of The Erdtree.

The story trailer is already out but doesn’t reveal much about what’s actually going to happen. What we do know, however, is that the expansion has its own unique map that will add new areas, weapons, and enemies to the base experience.

However, you can’t just log in and immediately access the new map, as you’ll need to have reached a certain point in Elden Ring to access it, and that means getting to Mohgwyn’s Palace and defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood.

How to get to Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring

In order to start Shadow Of The Erdtree you need to reach Mohgwyn Palace and touch the cocoon containing the body of the godlike being Miquella, which Mohg is protecting.

Reaching Mohgwyn Palace is not necessary in order to beat Elden Ring and many players will have no idea it even exists, so accessing Shadow Of The Erdtree is tricky even before you even start.

You can only get to Mohgwyn’s Palace via teleportation, and there are two ways you can do that. Both can be mastered before the DLC is released though, so it’s highly advised you do that before it is released on June 20.

The first method is to complete the optional White Mask Varré mission quest until you get the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, which gets you to Mohg.

The second way is to travel to the Consecrated Snowfield, in the northeast of The Lands Between, where you can use a waygate to teleport to Mohgwyn’s Palace.

Completing the White Mask Varré quest line is likely the fastest option if you’re starting a new game. But if you already have most of the sites of grace unlocked, the Consecrated Snowfield is probably quicker.

The White Mask Varré quest line is relatively easy and involves talking to Varré right at the beginning of the game, as you step out into the open world for the first time.

After you’ve beaten the first boss, Margit, return to him and the quest will begin. Return to him again after beating Godrick and he’ll relocate to the Rose Church of Liurnia.

Do everything he tells you and he’ll eventually reward you with the Pureblood Knight’s Medal item, which is what will teleport you to Mohgwyn Palace. Just be aware that completing his quest involves invading another player’s game, which in turn requires that you’re online and have a PlayStation Plus or Games Pass Core subscription.

Getting to the Consecrated Snowfield is more straightforward but also more time-consuming, as it’s one of the last areas reached in the game.

You’ll need the Haligtree Secret Medallion to use at the Grand Lift of Rold. The left half of the medallion can be found at the Village of the Albinaurics. Go up the hill from the site of grace and hit the suspicious looking pot there, and you’ll get an unexpected surprise.

The right half of the medallion is at Castle Sol, in the very north of the map, where you’ll have to defeat Commander Niall to get it.

The actual waygate is in the northwest of the Consecrated Snowfield, where you’ll have to fight an AI controlled invader to activate it.

On top of this, Mohg is no pushover, but if you summon a bunch of co-operators and try and make use of the Mohg’s shackle item, which can be found in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, you should be ready for the DLC.
