Carrie Bradshaw’s romance with Aidan Shaw on “And Just Like That” has been moving in slow gear ever since the two first reunited last year. Rather than jump into a full-blown life together, Aidan realized that his home would still be in Virginia, with his troubled son, for the next five years, and Carrie agreed to be there when he was ready for more.
Aidan’s visit on the latest episode of AJLT featured a bombshell that no one saw coming. He admitted to sleeping with his ex-wife, Kathy, after dealing with a stressful situation with their son. None of the writers wanted Carrie to have a massive reaction to Aidanâs confession, EP Julie Rottenberg told TVLine, âYou sort of see her talk herself through it.â
Aidan Stunned Carrie With His Bombshell Admission
GettyAidan attempted to be playful when he first arrived at Carrie’s and tried to get her attention by throwing a pebble at her window. The window wasn’t the only fragile thing that was affected by the impact of his visit. After shattering her ancient window, Aidan later risked breaking her heart by admitting that he had slept with his ex.
Even more shocking than his misstep was her reaction. Carrie told him, âI kind of understand,â adding that she never agreed not to sleep with other people while they were apart, a revelation that floored Aidan.
Executive Producer, Elisa Zuritsky, believes: âIn life, I think we donât say everything we think and feel at every moment, especially when the stakes are so high, and we really wanted to explore that kind of gray area between two people who really want it to work. Like, you sort of donât want to ruin it by over-talking.â
How Will Their Relationship Change After Aidan’s Revelation?
The revelation that made Aidan feel so guilty seemed to barely impact Carrie, but it did require a second look at what terms the duo was willing to agree to.
Zuritsky says that Aidan’s indiscretion “wasnât the thing that broke them, or at least in this episode caused such conflict, but it was the reveal of: âWait a minute, what did you agree to?â Itâs sort of like neither of them wanted to go back. Actually, itâs like going back to the most painful moment for each of them, for different reasons⦠I think there were a number of places where I felt like at any time, one of them could just want to eject out of that really sticky situation.â
The agreement that Carrie and Aidan made was a massive topic in the “And Just Like That” writers’ room as they started working on Season 3. Elisa Zuritsky told TVLine: âOn the first day, we all talked about what we each individually thought Aidan was asking Carrie to agree to, and we all said different things. So what we realized was: This is the perfect sociological or psychological experiment, where two people have basically signed different contracts.â
Carrie and Aidan have been through so much over the last 20 years, and this is one more instance where they are not actually in sync. Will they be able to make a new deal that they can both agree on clearly?
