“America’s Got Talent” judge Howie Mandel is opening up about his grandson Axel’s health, sharing that he’s “doing good” and in remission after battling leukemia.
“He’s doing good. It’s a journey and it’s rough at times that I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy,” Mandel told People at the “AGT” finale on September 24. “But he’s in remission right now, and we just hope and pray and take care of him each and every day.”
The “Howie Mandel Does Stuff” podcast host added, “Science is fantastic and the people at Children’s Hospital have been wonderful.”
Mandel and his daughter, Axel’s mom Jackelyn Shultz, appeared together on the September 17 episode of “In Depth with Graham Bensinger” and revealed for the first time what their family had been going through. They shared that Axel was diagnosed with leukemia during a family vacation to Hawaii, when they assumed he merely had the flu.
Howie Mandel Gave Details About Axel’s Cancer Journey
Mandel is the father of three adult children, Shultz, 41, Alex, 33, and Riley, 31. He is a very hands-on grandpa to his three grandchildren, Axel, Abbey, 11, and Noa, who turned 1 in March. Axel and Abbey are siblings, and according to Mandel, she made a big sacrifice to save her little brother.
“He had to have a bone marrow transplant from his sister,â Mandel shared with Graham Bensinger. Shultz tearfully explained what a difficult experience Axel’s cancer battle had been. “That was definitely the lowest point in my whole entire life,” she admitted.
Shultz added that there was good news as well. “We’re very fortunate because he is doing really really well right now,” she said.
Mandel’s Daughter Dealt With Her Son’s Cancer Privately
Jackelyn Shultz and her dad are very close, and together they co-host the podcast “Howie Mandel Does Stuff.” During the father-daughter duo’s appearance on “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” Shultz spoke about a particularly difficult aspect of dealing with her son’s cancer without the public’s knowledge.
Shultz explained that received backlash from fans of the show for wearing a mask whenever she and her dad had a guest in the studio amid Axel’s health crisis. âI got such hate and vitriol … they thought it was because I didn’t agree with their politics or whatever,” she said.
Shultz continued, “I was just, in my mind, I’m like, âThey have no idea what I’m going through right now. They have no idea that I’m just trying to be able to go visit my son in the hospital.ââ
