The Stray Cats have been forced to scrap their tour after singer and guitarist Brian Setzer’s ‘serious illness’.
The 80s rockabilly group were set to tour the US this year with 21 dates, kicking off on Halloween, that have now all been cancelled.
Brian, 66, was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease earlier this year, after being left unable to play the guitar during their 2024 tour.
‘The Stray Cats have cancelled their fall cross-country tour due to serious illness,’ the band announced on social media.
They assured fans that refunds would be given as they are currently unable to reschedule due to Brian’s health.
In a personal note, the guitarist added: ‘I’m heartbroken to share, due to serious illness, I am unable to perform and very regrettably have to cancel our Stray Cats tour.’
He continued: ‘I know this affects so many people and I am devastated to have to deliver this news. I’ve been trying everything I can to go on and do these shows, but it is just not possible.
‘I’ve been looking forward so much to being on stage with my band mates again and playing for all of our amazing fans, and I’m gutted.’
Bassist Lee Rocker shared the message on his Instagram, but neither he nor drummer Slim Jim Phantom added to the news.
Last year, while on tour, Brian’s hands began cramping up, so he was no longer able to play guitar.
While there was no pain, his sensations were numbed and he described the feeling like ‘wearing a pair of gloves’.
‘I have seen some progress in that I can hold a pen and tie my shoes,’ Brian previously shared in an update, although he has not shared any further details of his condition.
He continued: ‘I know this sounds ridiculous, but I was at a point where I couldn’t even do that. Luckily, I have the best hospital in the world down the block from me.
‘I know I will beat this, it will just take some time. I love you all, Brian.’
In March, he said he was getting better every day, confirming his hopes of returning to the band and even playing his annual Christmas show.
The following month he celebrated his birthday, posting a video of himself singing and playing guitar with the caption, ‘man, did I miss this.’
Stray Cats announced the tour in July, saying they were ‘fired up’ to return and had also recorded their first studio album in six years.
The band formed in the 1979, producing popular tracks such as Stray Cat Strut and Bring It Back Again.
Their song Rock This Town is considered to be one of the most influential rock and roll tracks ever and is listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
